“And you know where they were in the game at that point? The ninth inning,” Scully said. “The score tied 1 to 1. Nine one one. Nine eleven. How about that?”

Wow.

Sure is. I know a Mexican guy who says that he learned English listening to Scully.

LA has had some great ones, including Chick Hearn. Their current broadcast team is just terrible. I haven’t rooted for the Lakers since he passed.

I am not even a sports fan but I have grown up my whole life with him. I will miss him when one day he’s retired.

Please. Ever heard of Red Barber and Mel Allen?

I can listen to Scully for about 1/2 an inning, then I have to shut the sound off.
He NEVER shuts up.

Yep, "Chicky Baby" was legendary. During his prime (which lasted until the early '90s) Chick made listening to basketball on the radio much more exciting than actually watching a game broadcast by any other announcer. Nothing escaped his notice, and his enthusiasm was infectious.

I sat right next to him (across the aisle) when I had season tickets for the Lakers in the early '70s when his color guy was Lynn Shackelford. His broadcast of the game was within earshot. Very friendly fellow.

Heard both of them quite a bit, actually. Vin was Red’s protege, and surpassed him in competence by the time he was 30. Mel Allen was probably the 2nd best baseball announcer. ...behind Scully.

In the last few years Vin has indeed become a bit longwinded, but in his prime (which lasted about a half century) that wasn’t the case.

My favorite Chick memory: Back in 2002, my wife and I were flying back to LA from Vegas while the Lakers were playing Game 6 vs. Sacramento. Apparently, the pilot was a huge Lakers fan and wanted to get back to catch the game. It was obvious that he was hauling ass. The flight felt faster than a normal flight at cruising altitude, during which time he kept the passengers updated with the score. We made it in about 39 minutes. I had no idea pilots were allowed to do that.

Anyhow, when we landed, my wife and I ran to the car and put on the radio. We listened to Chick call most of the very exciting 2nd half on our drive back to Long Beach, and then caught the rest of the game on TV.

The portion of the game that we heard Chick call was much more exciting than actually watching it.

We’re actually Clippers fans, and Ralph Lawler is a very good play-by-play man. He’s been calling Clippers games since the 70’s, which means that he’s seen a LOT of losing, LOL.

Great story. lol...the pilot was probably running to the lounge before the first passenger had unbuckled his seatbelt.

Jack Buck was great.

Carey was entertaining in a boozy sort of way.
