men driving fairy cars need to have a word with themselves.

I think that guys should drive a car that fits their needs. Someone who hauls wood across backroads for a living, doesn't need a Prius. And someone who lives in downtown NYC, and commutes 12 blocks, doesn't need a F-350 Dualie to do it. Now, if either of these guys WANT their particular vehicle, that's okey-dokey, but I'll think that they're foolish for it.

That being said, I work with a number of guys who drive plastic hybrid cars, and the mental gymnastics they make to justify their decisions never ceases to amaze me. I had one tell me that his hybrid "got 30 mpg, but its actually more than that because it shuts off at stoplights".

I didn't have the heart to tell him that if you put 10 gallons in the tank, and drive 300 miles on, then you're getting 30 mpg, irregardless of WHEN your car shuts off.

“I drive an H3”

I recall a few years ago at $3+ gallon prices an H3 owning FReeper commented on fueling up at a gas station when a Prius driver on the same pump commented: “I bet you wish you were driving something like this nowadays”, FReeper replied: “No, I still date women”.

Isn’t that the truth! Since I drive a Suburban, I get calls all the time. I also get requests from hybrid owners to drive their children to X or Y since they can’t fit their kids (instruments, football gear, etc) in their car. It does get rather awkward.

A pickup truck is a vehicle originally designed for men who work with their hands and have to frequently carry large loads. The bed of the truck used to be able to carry a 4 x 8 foot sheet of plywood. In many pickups these days, the bed has been shortened to make room for extended cabs leaving barely any room for a load of furniture or firewood or compost or whatever. Today men with office jobs use pickups as a kind of pseudo symbol of masculinity.

I know I am painting with a broad brush here, but, I think this is an example of symbolism over substance. For me, a vehicle is a thing to get me from point A to point B with reasonable safety and comfort. I don’t “get” those who see it as an extension of their personality, politics, or manliness.

My wife was driving my 3/4 ton GMC Sierra Duramax truck in Denver with our daughter and 2 year old grandson and was screamed at by one of Denvers finest girly men because of a
MCCain and retired army sticker. “He” yelled f—k you and f—MCCain. I have a MOntana license plate and little did he realize that a lot of Montana trucks have a 357 in the glove box. She held her cool and did not do what I would have done. Of course if I was driving, he would have never yelled. He was an example of Denvers finest “male” residents.

Be a man first. Then pick your vehicle.

The trappings of manliness are not a substitute for it.

I drive a Prius because it fits my needs.

I didn’t realize I had to buy a car that effectively reinforced how much of a “tough guy” I am.

It also never occurred to me that others would demand I “have a talk with myself.” (Aside: what am I supposed to say to myself exactly? I’m pretty busy.)

That said, I have absolutely zero animus towards anyone who chooses to drive a truck or SUV, and I don’t support the government’s efforts to bribe people into buying this or that vehicle.

See, I support free markets and respecting individual choices.

I didn’t realize that would be so controversial on a conservative site.
