President 'slept on it' as tense military chiefs awaited decision Action started the next morning when Obama declared 'it's a go' Mission delayed by one day after heavy cloud cover on Saturday night Navy seals dodged Pakistani security to reach Bin Laden's lair Outpouring of emotion on streets down to 'the same sense of unity that prevailed on 9/11' Obama told members of Congress
Barack Obama kept military commanders hanging by declaring he would 'sleep on it' before taking 16 hours to give the go-ahead to raid Bin Laden's compound.
Hit squads of specialist Navy Seals - who were not even told who they were preparing to capture - had practised the mission at two reconstructions of the terror chiefs sprawling compound.
The mission looked set to be given the all clear last Thursday when analysts confirmed beyond doubt that Bin Laden was in busy town of Abbottabad in northern Pakistan.

16 hours.
What was going on 16 hours previous?
Only the Royal Wedding.
Obama is a jerk. But even he would not be jerky enough to overshadow the Royal Wedding.
Right?
So - in the meantime - OBL had 16 more hours to breath.
Instead of a call at 3:00 am it was somehting that he needed “to sleep on”. Sounds more like he needed to check all the potential political ramifications for his re-election in 2012.
What bold, decisive leadership. Get backed in a corner, retreat to your room to suck on your thumb for 16 hours, finally decided when you have no other choice, and then take credit for the whole thing.
Hilarious!!!! Witty post-o-the-day!!!
The go order was issued by BD, LP and HC, Obama was told the decision, not requested to make one. Administration scrambled to abort. That order was overruled again by BD, LP and HC. Obama had no choice but to comply because he was probably told someone would leak what he failed to do before the 2012 election.
The killing of Osama Bin Laden was in fact a Coup within Obama WH. Fearless leader's only contribution was to shutup and sit in the corner.
I strongly disagree with this. A failed mission may never have been brought to the public's attention.
For that matter, Carter's failed hostage rescue mission in 1979 may never have been made public were it not for the fact that Iranians had begun to issue public statements about what happened in the desert. I believe there may have been some unexpected contact between the U.S. forces and Iranian civilians on that mission that sort of "blew the cover" a bit.
Exactly. It was clear he had no illusions about the completely inconsequential role Zero played in this whole affair. If anything, he was a liability.
Did he play golf or make a campaign speech during that 16 hours?
No, that is about the time it takes for Barry to Blackberry his boss Soros and get orders on what to do.
You just can't barge in on Soros anytime you want. Barry has to get scheduled in like everyone else.
“Golfed on it”
I understand what you're saying. And, if this was Obama's first encounter with the plan, "sleeping on it" would be totally appropriate.
But isn't it evident that the planning for this operation has been going on for months? And that the President has been advised at every step? Indeed, has expressly approved of the planning's progression?
In other words, all of the reservations and second thoughts and concern for a "world-changing action" should have already been weighed and put behind him.
Strikes me that this particular session came under the heading of "we're ready, the training is complete, the subject is confirmed to be present, the circumstances are ripe". Time to go/no go -- since conditions could only deteriorate from that point.
That's not the time to "sleep on it". It's time to make a decision.
How will this affect my popularity?.....My base will be mad at me and conservatives will hate me either way.....What the hell...tap him!
Why the rush? Well for one thing, it prevents anyone from kidnapping people and demanding an exchange, or in any other manner “negotiating” for Osama’s freedom. A done deal is cleaner. Also, nobody can demand that he be read his rights or given a trial. That too is messy. Every country, every faction chiming in with their opinion, mostly anti-US, and meanwhile 0bama has to face the voters next year.
Better to ask forgivenness than permission, as the saying goes.
Remember people Delta Six wanted to scorch that place to the ground zero wanted to send in the special forces. If you got your trigger on one of the most hated enemies of this country you pull it. Sixteen friggin hours?!! Shows how out of touch this bum is. What if Osama would have left in those sixteen hours? Think about it.
The killing of Osama Bin Laden was in fact a Coup within Obama WH.

Indecision may or may not be my problem.
40 minutes was the time they spend on ground. The firefight probably didn’t last longer than 5 minutes.
