On InTrade -- the prediction market site where people bet on various outcomes -- the odds Obama is re-elected exploded higher last night after the news of Osama Bin Laden's capture and death.
Check it out.
And this is the point where serious political analysts say things like: Well, it's a long way until the election and that it's ultimately the economy that will decide things.
And there's probably some validity to that. But obviously this was a huge moment for the President, and the contrast he can draw -- working on this plan for months -- compared to the other candidates is pretty sharp.

I would actually be a little worried if people didn’t rally around President for at least day.. It is patriotism(which is good) more than anything right now.. Eventually things will get back to normal and his polls will drop...
What's he going to do on the eve of the election now?
“Bush the elder was at +90% approval rating after the first Gulf War. Look what good that did him.”
Leftists and other assorted liberals were still pissed at Reagan and Bush for starting the AIDs epidemic.
Joe yeah right,Who put the dead or alive order out and had the mechanism in place?
The GOP, long as bonehead is in the chair, we are done!
I think your assessment is exactly correct.
It’s an American thing. We all know the military took control of the operation. Americans aren’t crediting Obama with this except, as I pointed out in another comment, he DID give a final approval....I suppose that’s something.
But it ain’t gonna win the man the next election, silly to even think it will.
“Prices at the gas pumps will soon take care of any poll bumps.”
Obama will be peeing out $1 gasoline by Memorial Day.
“cant take it away from Obama.”
He will benefit through 2012. This will make it very difficult to make a national security case against Obama, when he did in 2 years what Bush couldn’t in 7. It may not be fair, but it happened on his watch.
Some of ObL's admirers will decide to join him in 72-virgin land and kill themselves in a spectacular way. People won't feel any safer.
Someone just reminded me here at work about what happened with the 1st George Bush. His approval rating after winning the 1st Gulf war was at 91%. However in the end his bid for reelection failed.
He said in the end the Gulf war didn’t help the 1st George Bush get his second term.
So there is HOPE that history will repeat itself in the 2012 election!
Wait until the dusts settles and the true details trickle out into the public.
Yes,
And I’m glad this happened now because Americans have such short attention spans that by November of next year they will have forgotten about this.
Wait until the dusts settles and the true details trickle out into the public.
Like i’ve been saying, polls are nothing more than a “mind control” method.
Hussein cannot live long on this cycle....it will give a bump, but gas and food prices still suck, his deathcare law blows, and the REAL HEROES are the military, not the chump who got out of their way.
Look, bin Laden was killed on Hussein’s WATCH, not BECAUSE of Hussein. The American people will realize that fact.
Exactly! The recession in 1991 would be downright rosy compared to today.
I hear the Muzz-Bros in Egypt are pretty riled up over this (bin Laden). I never have thought that Egypt was going to end well.
Keep your eyes now on Egypt and Libya. These are Obama’s wars.
My eyes are playing tricks on me. I read “eve of destruction” not “eve of the election”.
