Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich plans to officially enter the presidential race early next week, he told Hotline On Call before Saturday's White House Correspondents Dinner.
"I'll be in by the 10th or 11th," Gingrich said, without elaborating on where or how he would announce his candidacy.
Gingrich had previously hinted that his announcement could come this week, telling reporters in Philadelphia on Thursday, "I would just say to folks who are really curious: Watch Facebook and Twitter in the next week. I think you'll have all the information you need."
But Gingrich walked back from that statement on Saturday, explaining that he hasn't yet completed the long and complex process of untangling himself from a web of business ventures that would complicate his candidacy in the eyes of the Federal Election Commission.
Gingrich spokesperson Rick Tyler cited those "business entanglements" and "contractual obligations" last week in explaining that Gingrich would not participate in the first GOP primary debate in South Carolina on Thursday. Participants in the debate are required to have filed paperwork for an exploratory committee with the FEC, which Gingrich has been unable to do.
Gingrich, whose campaign will be headquartered in Atlanta, will address the Georgia Republican Party's annual convention on May 13.
If he declares his candidacy earlier that week, Gingrich will have the rest of the month set up nicely for early state campaigning: He visits Iowa on May 20 to keynote a fundraiser for the Ida County GOP, and travels to New Hampshire on May 25 for a meet-and-greet reception at the Manchester home of former Senate candidate and conservative kingmaker Ovide Lamontagne, whose Granite Oath PAC is hosting a series of receptions for Republican presidential contenders.
Just got back from a funeral and then this!
Oh, how EXCITING.
Seriously, why bother, Gingrich? You KNOW the pictures of you surfing the couch with Nancy will kill any chances. Or are you just doing this in order to get some nubile young interns to hang with each day for a few months? We know how much you like that.
Go pound sand Newt, we ain’t buying it anymore.
LOL!
For me, it's Sarah Palin or nobody.
Newt's an "idea" guy. Problem is, a lot of his ideas are bad: global warming, bi-partisanship, his commitment to marriage, etc.
Newt, then, is best employed as an "idea guy" by somebody who can sort thru and reject the bad stuff, but champion the good stuff. Making him a cabinet secretary actually requires that he run an organization -- which is beyond Newt. Instead, he's the quintessential "kitchen cabinet" guy that a President can ignore if he/she needs to.
I kinda like him as UN Ambassador. Let him put his caustic wit and prickly-pear temper to good use.
He is overexposed to the BELTWAY virus, and is insensitive to the folks back home. He is the spoiler who compromises like the pros, and end up with more of the SAME.
He just isnt listening, is he? How many times do we have to say “dont bother Newt”, before he buys a clue?
Snowball
Hell
Get real, Newt!
No one can forget the image of him sitting on the couch with Pelosi yacking about globull warming.
He is a reach-across-the-aisle type now, I liked him better as a bomb thrower for our side!
Why?
Sad.
You mean the two or three phone calls we've gotten already have been ~unofficial~ phone calls! How many ways can we say "not newt, not ever".
It's probably going to take a couple of single-digit showings in the primaries.

I was hoping this was humor but unfortunately it isn’t.
Is going to revive Bob Dole to be his running mate for another stumble for the White House?
