The Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf plug-in cars both earned top scores in crash tests, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said Tuesday.
Both vehicles earned the Institute's coveted Top Safety Pick award, given to cars that get the best possible ratings in side and front crash tests as well as the best scores for whiplash protection in rear impacts.
The Leaf and the Volt each weigh almost 700 pounds more than comparable gasoline-powered cars by Nissan and General Motors.
The extra weight, mostly in the form of large battery packs, should help their performance in real-world crashes, the Institute said in its statement. In crashes between different vehicles, the lighter vehicle bears the brunt of the impact.
"The Leaf and the Volt's extra mass give them a safety advantage over other small cars," Nolan said. "These electric models are a win-win for fuel economy and safety.
Since the Institute's tests involve crashing vehicles into a fixed barrier instead of into another car, the weight advantage was not a factor in the test scores.

This will be the only time in print where you will see a confession by the Libs that CAFE standards aimed at making cars lighter actually result in more dangerous and life-threatening vehicles.
That is why they hate the SUV (for you,not them) - they want you maimed, disfigured and dead.
Ever throw a D battery real hard at something? Changes are, what you hit looks worse than the battery (I’ve seen them chip cinder block)
Multiply that by 10000 :)
” “The Leaf and the Volt’s extra mass give them a safety advantage over other small cars,”...In crashes between different vehicles, the lighter vehicle bears the brunt of the impact. “
In other words, they’re more likely to kill me.
CHANCES are, what you hit.....
not enough coffee yet
SUV -- unsafe, because although the driver is likely to survive inside the massive body, other cars may not do so well when hit by a big SUV.
Electric car -- very safe because the driver is likely to survive inside the massive body, and isn't that the only thing that matters when discussing safety?
Just how does the massive amount battery acid from the mega battery pack that likely spills all over you in a crash figure in this rating?
The Obama administration will need to buy gazillions of the things, because it looks like the public just isn’t interested. Even Consumer Reports has panned the Volt.
Oscars, Emmys, and Nobel prizes to follow...
This is ridiculous. Heavier cars do better in crash tests because the heavier weight is due to more sheet metal around the occupants, NOT a battery. By this logic, a VW Jetta with 800# of tools in the trunk will be better in a crash test than an identical car with an empty trunk!
I’m thinking that being hooked up to an extension cord 23 hours a day limits your chances of getting in an accident more than anything else.
Lithium-ion batteries used in these vehicles do not use acid.
There’s a good propogandist, CNN... yes you are, yesss youuu are...
Have a cookie
Yes Acid and lead all over the accident scene as the heavey batteries tear thru flimsy plastic & sheet metal.
that’s nice
The Volt and Leaf could come with a eco-refrig and eco-72 virgins ... and they would still be over-priced pieces of manmade excrement. =.=
They tested them against golf carts?
