Chrystia Freeland has called the US prison system an "American Gulag Archipelago." The Global Editor-at-Large of Reuters made her comment during today's Dylan Ratigan show on MSNBC.
The context was a discussion of the recent WikiLeaks document dump about Gitmo, but Freeland was clearly speaking of the domestic US prison system, not our military prisons. Ratigan picked up on her theme, saying we could cut our prison costs in half if marijuana were legalized.

Haven’t the foggiest idea. But socialism certainly hasn’t worked for them: they’re now bankrupt.
From an insider’s viewpoint.......I think the lady ought to have some “first-hand” experience of life in a female prision.......First thing that’ll go is those long locks.....
Prisoners; male, female or anywhere in between, are incarcerated for good reasons. Mostly because their activities, (these days) were criminal or aided/abetted others’ criminal activities. Most are multiple offenders. Most are convicted of crimes involving drugs and/or associate criminal activities like thefts, burgulary, carjacking, robbery, prostitution, extortion, murder and assault. A large percentage are gang members.
And most are dumber than three truck loads of rocks..... Anyone doubting the validity of the detrimental effects of fetal exposure to drugs/alcohol and poor maternal/post-partum nutrition are invited to spend some time with these individuals.....Poor short term memory, ADD, poor fine motor skills, deficient cognitive ability, and lack of judgement.....All “compensated for” by enormous egos expressed in bizzare - yet common - modes of dress, speech and deportment prevail. >PS
Basically, the socialist/leftist virus like Russia, China, and France. Every other country it tries to destroy.

And is positively loathes the USA, of course.
And it has done pretty damn poorly for those three countries also.
China is starting to do better since basically disavowing communism but keeping most of the control.
Thanks for the mention. I don’t want to let our education system completely off the hook here though. Wouldn’t surprise me one bit if she learned a lot of personal bias right along with the coverage of the Gulag in her education process. Of course that’s providing this was even deemed important enough to relate to her during that process.
Freeland is an importtant editor at the Reuters wire service. She is in a position to influence the ‘news’ that millions of people in the US and abroad receive. I think it’s significant that someone in her position has such extreme, anti-American views, and feels comfortable expressing them on national TV.
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn wrote a book about the Soviet penal system. He called it the “Gulag Archipelago” because from space they were the only lighted areas of Siberia and looked like a string of islands.
To compare our prisons with cable TV and conjugal visits to the Soviet forced labor camps proves this person to be less than serious.
