On my way home from work tonight, I witnessed a mob of approximately 50 teens beating another teen and kicking him in the head right in the middle of 6 lanes of rush hour traffic on Connecticut Avenue just outside the National Zoo. It was terrifying. They left the victim lying in the middle of the street. He eventually stood up and was clearly dazed as he tried to walk. Eventually someone called him to the sidewalk and he managed to stumble away. Police were called but the traffic was simply too heavy for them to be able to catch up to the attackers. I doubt that this attack will be reported in the news. It was Black Family Reunion Day at the National Zoo.
There are some nice little middle class neighborhoods tucked in there west of 16th NW on Irving, Hobart Streets, for example. Their main civic activity is preventing the free food truck from parking at Rabaut Park and drawing in even more undesirables.
Not without packin some heat.
He is she. I’m sorry but one middle-aged woman against 50 thugs beating and kicking someone in the middle of the street would have gotten me killed. It was that scary.
Unfortunately, you are absolutely correct. Had you gotten involved they would have turned on you and it would have been Riverdance on your head next.
I discourage anyone from getting involved in any of those mob actions. They don’t fear anything, much less police and armed citizens. There is ALWAYS at least one of them with a pistol in a backback nearby. They hang to the edges of the melee looking for interlopers and will deal with them accordingly with close range shot to the head. The crowd will scatter in a million directions and the person carrying the gun will deposit it down the nearest sewer and make a phone call to a family member to be picked up. They will immediately go home and take a shower and destroy their clothes, most times. The no snitching mentality makes these case hard to investigate and prosecute.
Sigh. So much for Male Lesbian Hairy Biker Appreciation day. I was hoping for a little discount . . .
You missed your opportunity to go down a martyr today, but your family is probably happy you didn’t (not yet anyway). My husband has always worn a scapular and I’ve taken up the “habit” as well. For if one is wearing a scapular when they die, they will go to heaven. Comes in handy in situations like this when you’re nervous about the outcome. But scapular or not, I would have been plenty “concerned” as well.
“Why does this remind me of that old joke about, “what is the most confusing day in Harlem?”

Okay - I’ll bite. Is it Father’s Day?
My wife and I have been talking about going to DC to take the kids to the National Zoo and the Smithsonian. Maybe when some other administration is in office.
Washington, D.C. is a zoo, not just the national zoo.
(Fixed it...)
I laughed...
