Four families in Yoder are building a sand bunker and stockpiling ammunition and weapons.
A Black Forest resident has erected a geodesic dome on her 5-acre spread to grow vegetables, keeps horses for emergency transportation, in case she can't get gasoline for her car, and plans to acquire chickens and goats as food sources.
A husband and wife who have a cabin on 100 acres of secluded land in Park County have weaned their property from the electric grid, acquired a three-year food supply and taken other measures to become self-sufficient.

I totally agree,
And if someone has, or knows of an old horizontal mine shaft or natural cave system on some land, I am looking for same.
Yes it was a gratuitous vanity on my part and a highjack of sorts, but my request is real, as is the story of preppers ‘coming out” in the mainstream news.
Respects

Remember the ant and grasshopper story. The ant worked all summer while the grasshopper played. When winter came the ant had food but the grasshopper none so the grasshopper begged the ant for food.
The ant said, “I toiled while you played so now go away!”.
The grasshopper did go away and returned with the sheriff and a AK47 and through the exercise of eminent domain took it all from the ant, who died resisting arrest. (The sheriff got his cut too)

While there's little threat of the earthquake and tsumani that rocked Japan last month in landlocked Colorado, other epic crises on the home front are possible: A flood or fire. A terrorist attack. A nuclear weapons launch. World War III. Or an apocalyptic-type scenario. i.e. Zero gets reelected....

Beyond apocalyptic. If we do have a tsunami in CO that will be pretty bad too.

Building bunkers and indefensible positions are a isolated fool’s course of action.
If society breaks down and the looters come for what such have, they will do so with the numbers and resources to bring fire to bear from all points of the compass.

It’s interesting that you found this story in The Republic. That is my hometown and the newspaper is a leftist rag. I’m surprised they published such as story.

A year or so food supply and seeds are a good idea. So are bullets and guns. Bunkers? Maybe, if money is not an object no one can tell you have one.

Bob, who owns the cabin in Park County, said he used to be, as he says, "at peace" with the American government, but now, he said he is distrustful.
"It's like the government and law enforcement are bullies. They won't take care of us.
The dollar will crash, and the average American only has enough groceries in their house for three to five days. When it all goes to heck, what's going to happen?" he said.

Proverbs states “Consider the ant and her ways, how she gathers her food in spring time and harvest”....
Considering the ways of the ant includes the fact that the ant doesn’t do her job alone...that she in fact lives in a colony of ants and that when the nest is threatened...all the ants come out swarming against an agressor....especially when the ants are “fire ants”! Solomon would have just loved observing Fire ants!
My lesson...preppers of like mind need to become familiar with each other, create strategic alliances with each other to the point that they would die for one another and to learn to get over minor differences in terms of religious beliefs and customs.(You hear me Catholics, Protestants, and Orthodox as well as Conservative Orthodox Jews!) The “grasshoppers and their AK47 toting sheriffs” will need to be met with swarms of “fire ants”!

When I lived in Utah, a Mormon neighbor asked me if I had a year’s supply of food stashed away (something the Mormons try to do). I told him “No, I have guns and when the SHTF, I’m coming over to take your food away from you”.
I believe that was the last time he spoke to me. No sense of humor.
