I will admit that it appears that I am now wrong, based on additional information. The latest suggestion is that a male friend of one of the attackers was thought to have flirted with the transgender, in the opinion of the attacker, and likely the attacker felt that the transgender flirted back to the male friend.
Then the transgender went into the ladies room, while the two attackers waited in ambush for her to leave, then commenced the attack.
This possibility also explains what I was attempting to justify with my former scenario: savage anger on the part of the attackers.
In such attacks, in even what could be called “hate crimes”, there are generally limits to brutality. But when a victim, for example, is found stabbed 40 times, with a dozen stabs to their genitalia, as a rule of thumb, savage anger, is seen. This implies either that the attacker knew and was passionate with the victim, or that an unusually intense interaction had taken place.
The key, I presupposed, was the restroom, which led to my suggestion. However, if it was the perception of flirting, this would also possibly create savage anger.
Ironically, this also indicates that it was *not* a hate crime, because the attackers assumed that the transgender was indeed a woman, and not a transgender.

Good stuff yefrage...
I once took a job in Raleigh-Durham area and didn't want to move down there from Northeast Ohio, so I just commuted back and forth. I ended renting a room in a palatial house from this gay couple. I was only down there a few days a month, and it saved me $$$$.
Anyway being fat and nasty, I didn't have to worry about being hit on, or any of that, in fact at different times when others rented a room I don't think any of them were gay. One thing the "manly" one like to do was cook, so once or twice a week I would eat with them and we'd get into these philosophical discussions about gay issues.
One thing I remember from this was that gay men found CDs/TGs whatever, we call them, weird. They didn't understand why they went through all that when it's not necessary (the thrill of sort of tricking straight guys I guess).
Anyway my point is that don't be surprised if the GLBT community doesn't make a big deal about this like the victim would probably like.
Me, if I'd been there I'd have jumped in and probably kicked one of those nutcases right in the crotch. Hell if if I saw a couple of guys beating up a gay guy because he "looked" at one of them, I'd jump in there too. And I really don't care what the so-called perversion was, those nutbags who said nothing about it being a "man" need their loud-mouthed jaws broken.
There is simply no justification for continuing to kick that chick(with @#$#) in the face. The fight was over, the tranny wasn't fighting back. The teenage girls were animals pure and simple.
I hope they rot. Now having said all that, I am eating popcorn and hoping this thing blows up. I love the one protected group vs. another angle and seeing libs squirm and tap dance on the matter. I am really hoping this Chrissy finds the most obnoxious publicity hungry attorney around, to get this whole thing to go even more viral than it already has.

Ironically, this also indicates that it was *not* a hate crime, because the attackers assumed that the transgender was indeed a woman, and not a transgender. Not that I believe in hate crimes (aka thought crimes) anyway, but the hateful behavior of the two perps, the witholding of aid by the employees, and the coaching by the employee with the camera of the perps suggests a racial motive.
But as we saw with Freddie's Fashion Mart those things don't get prosecuted. A jury of peers in Baltimore would likely not be sympathetic to the victim's charge of a 'hate crime'.

If this is the case, I can't help but feel it goes back to an indictment on the behavior of urban low-income people. But that would be racist.
