We can learn a great deal by reading Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, but we cannot read the book without being both impressed and grieved.

Are Chinese mothers superior? Amy Chua clearly believes so, and her argument has just as clearly caught the attention of the American public. Chua’s book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, has made The New York Times bestseller list for the past ten weeks. This mom struck a raw nerve.
Chua, the John M. Duff Professor of Law at Yale Law School, fired her first shot with a column published in the Wall Street Journal entitled, “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior.” It was a shot heard around the world — especially by other moms. The uproar followed immediately — and no wonder. Chua accused Western mothers of being lax and undemanding, and therefore producing underachieving children.

For those interested in reading reviews (by Conservatives. They're easy to spot because their concern for the authors daughters are evident), just visit Amazon. The descriptions of Chua's cruelty towards her own children should make your stomach turn.

More proof of their mental illness.
The turned stomachs, however, fail to answer the question of why such a small minority -less than 3% of the population - manages to take 20% of the places in our top universities. And lets not fool ourselves, if it were not for active discrimination against them (by eminently enlightened liberals no less) they would be at 50%.
And this superiority in academics starts very early. The reasons can only be “tiger mothers”, AKA a rather fundamental cultural influence, or genetics. Better for all of us if the reason for this is “tiger mothers”, because there is a hope of adaptation. If its genetics, forget it, we are doomed.
Cruelty or otherwise is irrelevant. Its all about superiority.
Actually, the liberals don't love her, at all. She has become, in large part, persona non grata in those circles. As Moehler points out, she values something that most liberal parents don't - personal responsibility and achievement.

Because it does make a difference, in China.
And liberals don’t love her. They hate her thoroughly as far as I can see. Theres nothing like a liberal for deliberate refusal to acknowledge reality.

Both sexes achieve similarly based on the educational stats I have seen. Unlike the case for blacks, for instance, where there is a strong divergence between the sexes.
First, my wife who is an academic, would agree with you, entirely. Universities today, especially in the top tier, discriminate against Asians more actively than any other minority group has ever been discriminated against since 1964.
My wife (who has read the book) also believes that Asian students do better than all the other students (collectively) for one reason, and one reason only - they work harder. Much, much harder.

Stereotypes are shorthand for statistical facts.
Its an old trick of Liberal brainwashing to dismiss such facts by accusing people of using stereotypes.
No one can deny the superior academic performance and achievement by Asians.
Your reasoning is post hoc ergo propter hoc. Furthermore, Asians aren’t the only academic achievers in history. Having come from a strong Asian cultural background, I can assure you that a majority of my Asian relatives and friends do not resort to the type of “discipline” and abuse the Tiger Mother uses.
It comes down to concentrated commitment to family with a particular focus on academic achievement. Also, the Asians traditions concerning respect towards your elders plays a pivotal role as well in their academic performance.
She threw a hand made card back at her child and said it was not good enough? Wow. Doesn’t make for great childhood memories. I think there’s more to life than being able to attend Harvard.

I think people can be intellectually superior, but there is also natural selection, the professionals usually breeding with other professionals, and thus their children will probably be quite intelligent....
but hey...intelligence only goes so far...some mass murderers were highly intelligent...
Chua was the darling of the media. As a matter of fact, the book has been on the best sellers list thanks to the MSM’s publicity push.
Visit Amazon and read all those Liberals reviews. You’re note the common theme.
The only reason the MSM and other liberals are jumping ship is because the public outcry has been overwhelming.

I’ll simply say happiness is more important than achievement.
Thats where we get to the nitty-gritty of the question - what, exactly, make Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese 3-year olds - it starts that young - outperform white, black and hispanic 3-year olds ?
Its NOT an academic tradition. In most cases we are talking about the children or grandchildren of peasants and laborers; I have been to many poor Asian immigrant homes in the US, and in most cases there ARE NO BOOKS in the house.
What we desperately need are detailed comparative time-and-motion studies of these mothers, tiger or otherwise.
