(WIREUPDATE.com) A list of nearly 5,200 names of gun permit owners in Des Moines, Iowa was published on Thursday in the Des Moines CityView paper, sparking privacy concerns among the residents. In the article titled Whos Packing the names of those who filed for a gun permit under the new Iowa gun law are listed in alphabetical order.
With nearly 5,200 applications to carry already this year, its safe to say that plenty of people, including your neighbors and friends, are now packing heat. Cityview author Jared Crutis wrote before naming all the residents.
The article was published in both the weekly print edition and online.
The publication of this information has put law-abiding citizens in harm. In a recent article in Newsmax magazine John Stossel wrote of a similar situation in Illinois. State attorney general Lisa Madigan came under fire earlier this month for wanting to release the names of gun owners in the entire state.
Publication of that list would tell the criminal class where the guns are, which could be useful to two different sorts of lawbreakers: gun thieves who want to know where the guns are and burglars who want to know where they are not. Stossel concluded.
According to Polk County Sheriffs office 5,195 applications for a permit to carry were received by the department so far in 2011.
Cityview is an independent weekly magazine that is available in rack-stands throughout central Iowa.
Attention criminals, everyone else is fair game.

Great list of houses NOT TO Burglarize!
Wow, those unintended consequences!
One can safely assume that Jared’s name is not on the PUBLISHED list. Does he have a permit?
If I was planning on robbing a house, I'd take this list along as a double check to make sure there ISN'T a gun inside.
Why don't we require newspapers to have government-issued permits in order to publish as well? That would only be fair, right?
If you are going to print the names of people enjoying their Constitutional rights, then enclude EVERYONE.

That’s a great point. It only helps the criminals.
FWIW, the boy’s name is Curtis, not Crutis (mispelling in the article).
Thanks fixed.
This is totally outrageous. Several of my relatives are on that list. People around here are saying they have never heard of such a thing. The sheriff’s office that released the information and this newspaper should be shamed and stuck with a class action lawsuit.
Release the names and addresses of all the newspapers employees from the editor to the janitor, see how they like that.
Dear criminals,
I don’t own a gun. - - -
But I do own a crossbow, olympic archery set, and a hunting slingshot.
I also practice a lot.
“Print the name of every woman who has obtained an abortion.”
The list of women who have had abortions should also be printed. However, the abortion list is not public record while the list of gun permit holders is public record.
Criminals love gun control...it makes their jobs safer.
