FMS: United Arab Emirates Requests 218 AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II Air-to-Air Missiles

News >> Missiles & Munitions >> Sales & Contracts

Released on Tuesday, April 19, 2011

United Arab Emirates AIM-9X-2 SIDEWINDER Missiles WASHINGTON, April 19, 2011 The Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress Monday of a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of the United Arab Emirates of 218 AIM-9X-2 SIDEWINDER Block II Tactical Missiles and associated equipment, parts, training and logistical support for an estimated cost of $251 million.

The Government of the United Arab Emirates has requested a possible sale of 218 AIM-9X-2 SIDEWINDER Block II Tactical Missiles, 40 CATM-9X-2 Captive Air Training Missiles (CATMs), 18 AIM-9X-2 WGU-51/B Tactical Guidance Units, 8 CATM-9X-2 WGU-51/B Guidance Units, 8 Dummy Air Training Missiles, containers, support and test equipment, spare and repair parts, publications and technical documentation, personnel training and training equipment, U.S. Government and contractor engineering and logistics support services, and other related elements of logistics support. The estimated cost is $251 million.

This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a friendly country that has been and continues to be an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East.

The proposed sale of the weapons will allow the United Arab Emirates to deploy aircraft to materially assist the U.S. in overseas contingency operations. The weapons will strengthen the effectiveness and interoperability of a potential coalition partner, reduce the dependence on U.S. forces in the region, and enhance any coalition operations the U.S. may undertake.

The United Arab Emirates will have no difficulty absorbing these missiles into its armed forces.

The proposed sale of this weapon system will not alter the basic military balance in the region.

The prime contractor will be the Raytheon Missiles Systems Company in Tucson, Arizona. There are no known offset agreements proposed in connection with this potential sale.

Implementation of this proposed sale will not require the assignment of any additional U.S. Government or contractor representatives to the UAE.

There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale.

This notice of a potential sale is required by law and does not mean the sale has been concluded.

CATM - Captive Air Training Missile

Only if I get to stay in that insanely awesome hotel. And I want to go to that beach with air conditioned sand.

I think it is time we put a condition upon the Saudis. They breed the hate against us as they use us for defense and for the education of their elites.

It is time to place conditions.

Number one is oil. Since our government has allowed the EPA and other criminal groups to keep the US from exploring and utilizing our own GOD GIVEN RESOURCES it is time to tell the Arabs that no more help until barrel prices are stabilized and reduced and perhaps the shipping costs could be assisted by them, as well. And I mean permanently.

It it time to stop this crazy attention to lobbyists and start dealing from strength.

If the Saudis were left to their own devices, without our help, they would have to live in the fear they placed upon us after 9/11 woke us up to what islam REALLY is all about.

That’s all fine and wonderful but the fact is that the Saudi government IS our ally. It’s the religious wackos in that country that are the problem. Well that is, until Obama screwed that relationship up. Or did he?

More importantly Saudi Arabia is our ally against Iran. You see, Iran (Shi’a) and the Saudis (Sunni) are locked in a proxy civil war (Fitna). The Saudis are BY FAR the lesser of two evils.

Send the missles.

Your fears misunderstand the situation totally. You assume you know what you talk about but in reality do not. Your studies of the Saudi’s are inadequate. Ditto the rest of the GCC

The GCC nations are our allies.

Then let them be an ally. Let them do their part to help out this nation instead of getting rich off of our import of their oil. Other nations use their oil as well.

Being a friend is a back and forth issue.

Let them do a better job of stopping anti-American hatred in their own nation and let them pay for their weaponry not only with money but with the power they have to impact OPEC and oil flow.

I understand making a deal.

And I understand that our fight is really with those who will not allow us to expand our oil production and the resulting facilities needed to refine it and that THAT is the bottom line.

Until we are a nation that becomes independent of our need to bow to barrel prices of nations that basically hate us, and refuse to be used as a defense stronghold without tying it to oil security, we will be looking at that five dollar a gallon gas and making them rich while each of us continue to suffer. And that is not to mention the hatred that is bred regaring our way of life that goes on other there.

We actually need them more than they need us.

There is only ONE reason they want the missiles: to help protect themselves against Iran at a time when they cannot depend on the US to come to their aid - either show up in a timely manner or stay long enough (reference Libya).

OPEC doesn’t really control the price of oil anymore. It’s an openly traded commodity. All they can do is control the flow.

Ive been to that hotel, had a few drinks at the bar at the very top. The tallest building in the world is also very impressive, looks like an evil tower of doom and quite ridiculously tall. U.A.E are a fine country, more progressive than most countries in the middle east, they sport an expatriate community in Dubai which outnumbers by far the local community.
