WASHINGTON, D.C. -
U.S. Senator Susan Collins, along with her colleagues Senators Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Mark Kirk (R-IL), and Tom Harkin (D-IA), have introduced the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) to finally prohibit job discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Senator Collins has long been a strong supporter of this legislation.
The Employment Non-Discrimination Act of 2011 would prohibit employers, employment agencies, labor organizations and joint labor-management committees from firing, refusing to hire, or discriminating against those employed or seeking employment, on the basis of their perceived or actual sexual orientation or gender identity. Such protections are already in place prohibiting discrimination based on race, religion, gender, national origin, age, and disability.
Our legislation affirms the principle that individuals should be judged solely on their skills and abilities, said Senator Collins. Similar to the current law in several states, including Maine, and the policies of many Fortune 500 companies, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act would close an important gap in federal civil rights laws by making it illegal to discriminate in employment based on sexual orientation. More than 85 percent of Fortune 500 companies already extend workplace protections based on sexual orientation and more than one-third on the basis of gender identity.
The Employment Non-Discrimination Act has been endorsed by national civil rights organizations such as the Human Rights Campaign, the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, the ACLU, labor organizations and more than 75 Fortune 500 companies.
In today's economy job security is important to all Americans, especially LGBT people who can be fired for no other reason than their sexual orientation or gender identity," said HRC President Joe Solmonese. "Passing ENDA is essential to ensuring that all Americans have an equal opportunity to work and contribute to this country's economy. I commend Senators Merkley, Kirk, Harkin and Collins for their leadership and commitment to ENDA. ###
Might pass the senate but DOA in House
I am getting really tired of these big government RINOs. Collins and Kirk should just be honest with themselves change the “R” after their name to a “D”.
Thought there was something odd about Kirk.
Do these politicians live on planet earth, where they would know it’s going to mean open season on normal people for the in-your-facers?
They’d better call the White House and concentrate on creating jobs first.
More B S.
How about ending job discrimination by making all states “right to work”??? Unions discriminate against non-union employees.
PING!
we should interpret this to mean Collins is seeking the DEM nomination for her seat in 2014. An opportunity for the right conservative.
Why not start a committee now? no need to wait until ‘13.
Doesn’t end “discrimination,” it imposes requirements at the point of a gun.
“LGBT people” will be able to sleep on the job all day then claim discrimination when they get fired!
Greece really needs to buy this state and all it’s idiots.
You mean they are going to
start hiring white hetero males?
If by "odd" you mean queer, you'd be right.
I’m more worried that it’s going to be a coast-to-coast “bathroom bill” for the workplace.
What good is an opposition Party that depends on the likes of clueless people like Collins?
At some point, sooner rather than later, apparently, we're going to have to admit one fundamental reason for the unqualified success of Democrats is their feeble opposition.
If the Republican Party were even half the institution it should be the Democrat Socialists wouldn't have gotten this far.
Susan Collins is the very definition of RINO, in person. That's her picture in the Urban dictionary, no words are necessary.
Organizing a lemonade stand for the Donner Party.
Don’t we already have freaking laws for that, for crying out loud?
This is gonna hurt the NBA and NFL when women want to work/play.
They’re going to take down those nasty discriminatory “men” and “women” signs?
idiocy
If you hear a primordial scream tonight, its just me venting.
vaudine
