Donald Trump Just Bought The Legendary Kluge Vineyard At A $64 Million Discount
Business Insider ^ | 4-8-11 | Leah Goldman and Kamelia Angelova

*snip*

The possible 2012 presidential candidate bought the famous Kluge Estate Winery and Vineyard for $6.2 million, a steal. The vineyard was valued at $70 million before the recession.

The Donald scooped up the incredible deal and said he would keep Patricia Kluge to oversee the operation of the winery because while he loves great real estate, wine doesn't really interest him. He plans to rename the vineyard and put his name on the bottle.

The full estate, including the Albermarle House, was listed for $100 million last year, but after failing to sell, dropped prices, and foreclosure, Bank of America bought the home last month at auction.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article said that Trump bought the full estate, whereas he really bought only the winery and vineyard.

Aha!

The winery is tucked into Carter's Mountain on the edge of the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains in Charlottesville, Virginia. Kluge Estate Winery & Vineyard's 900 acres are located on the same ridgeline of the birthplace of American viticulture, Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. Very Presidential...

Wasn’t Kluge (deceased now?) one of the richest men in the country at one time? Media empire, I think.

Since Trump didn't buy Albermarle House, I wonder how this is going to work? Is the manor house in the middle of the property and what kind of principal buildings does it have?

This economy is a wonderful time for those with liquid capital to make money hand over foot. Or, as liberals would say, the rich get richer.

A manager I once worked for used to say that if you took all the money away from everyone and distributed it evenly the same people would be rich again within a few short years because they are smarter, driven and motivated in ways those who are not rich don't understand.

It's intelligence, but it's also genetic.

Ah yes, whenever I sit down for a nice meal, nothing sounds more appealing than pairing it with a nice Virginian wine.

Actually, the estate itself looks beautiful. However, the article says he didn't get the estate, just the vineyard and winery.

LOL .. Pics of the mansion, which he DID NOT buy... (yet?) He bought just the vineyard and winery. What a gorgeous estate and property.

More pics at auction website.

Patricia Kluge's lavish Albemarle House mansion is back on the market for a reported $16 million. The estate sold at auction to Bank of America in February for $15.26 million.

The Georgian-style home, nestled in the foothills of Monticello, features eight bedrooms, 13 bathrooms and sits on 300 acres. The property includes a pool, pool house, log cabin, and staff cottages.

The estate was originally listed for $100 million in 2009, but the price was cut to $48 million in February 2010.

After some competition from Donald Trump's representatives, the estate was bought by Bank of America, which had filed a lawsuit in January alleging that Kluge defaulted on three loan payments totaling $23 million.

Trump purchased two tracts of the Kluge winery and vineyard along with trademark rights for $6.2 million during an auction on April 7. While he has made an effort to purchase the estate in the past, it is unknown whether the business mogul will make a bid.

“Wasn’t Kluge (deceased now?) one of the richest men in the country at one time? Media empire, I think.”

Correct; owner IIRC of Metromedia in Los Angeles = channel 5, and various other media properties. The Kluge that owned this winery/acreage is probably related (I do not know that for a fact) but not the same person.

I read about this transaction somewhere else that I cannot recall at this moment; but the Kluge (female) who owned (with her husband) this property had gotten herself into some very deep soup, financially. Trump absolutely stole it.
