The Presidential Divider
Wall Street Journal ^ | April 14, 2011

Posted on 04/14/2011 4:40:44 AM PDT by NCjim

Did someone move the 2012 election to June 1? We ask because President Obama's extraordinary response to Paul Ryan's budget yesterday—with its blistering partisanship and multiple distortions—was the kind Presidents usually outsource to some junior lieutenant. Mr. Obama's fundamentally political document would have been unusual even for a Vice President in the fervor of a campaign.

The immediate political goal was to inoculate the White House from criticism that it is not serious about the fiscal crisis, after ignoring its own deficit commission last year and tossing off a $3.73 trillion budget in February that increased spending amid a record deficit of $1.65 trillion. Mr. Obama was chased to George Washington University yesterday because Mr. Ryan and the Republicans outflanked him on fiscal discipline and are now setting the national political agenda.

Mr. Obama did not deign to propose an alternative to rival Mr. Ryan's plan, even as he categorically rejected all its reform ideas, repeatedly vilifying them as essentially un-American. "Their vision is less about reducing the deficit than it is about changing the basic social compact in America," he said, supposedly pitting "children with autism or Down's syndrome" against "every millionaire and billionaire in our society." The President was not attempting to join the debate Mr. Ryan has started, but to close it off just as it begins and banish House GOP ideas to political Siberia.

Mr. Obama then packaged his poison in the rhetoric of bipartisanship—which "starts," he said, "by being honest about what's causing our deficit." The speech he chose to deliver was dishonest even by modern political standards.

Obama is still insisting that he will cut the budget by "investing" in roads, education, health care, and green technology.

He's been slinging that BS since early in the 2008 campaign. It's completely nonsensical, but no one seems to call him on it.

ONe of the ways Candidate Obama appealed to conservatives and moderates in 2008, was his seeming "moderation", that he while he was liberal he would take the best ideas from all sides, including conservatives.

President Obama is making Bill Clinton look like a Henry Clay statesman. The worst part about it is the adolescent ridicule of his opponents. This is something a President should never do. As the article says, that should be left to low-level lieutenants.

and the Dem party, having gained control in 06, was slinging BS to pave the road for Obamy... These fools believe that by raising taxes on the “wealthy” somehow, we’ll climb out of this mess. We’re up to our nostrils and Obamy is standing ready with the last few shovels full. He’ll have achieved what, king of the dung heap? Ha, slinging BS indeed!;)

I howl when that asshat talks about returning the income tax rates to their historic higher levels. I guess someone brought up outside the country who believes there are 57 states does not know the 1913 income tax rates were a very high 3% on net income over $3000 (a tremendous income in those days) with a surcharge for those over 500K.

Charles Krauthamer is still dismissed as worthy for his correct assessment of the Delaware thing, but last night on the Fox panel he twice called the president a liar.

He did not mince words in his total trashing of the president, not the speech but the man

pitting "children with autism or Down's syndrome" against "every millionaire and billionaire in our society

This is just silly. The President is just evil. He doesn't want to be reasoned with.

A very good article by the WSJ. It should be read....then read again. Then sent to every editor of every major newspaper in the US with the demand to "PRINT THIS ON THE FRONT PAGE OF YOUR NEXT EDITION!!"

Doubt we'll see it, but it's worth a shot.

The stain spreads....

And he’ll cut the budget by $1 trillion by giving 20 million people health insurance. Somehow.

Facts and details are completely incidental to this President, and that is if he considers them AT ALL!!

I think you can regard yourself as grown up the day you realize that details are inevitable (and mom will NOT make them go away) and that facts are IMMOVABLE and IMMUTABLE.

With the realization of these two VERY BASIC concepts, you can pretty well stay out of trouble in this life.

“O” never made this basic realization.

According to Internal Revenue Service data, the entire taxable income of everyone earning over $100,000 in 2008 was about $1.582 trillion. Even if all these Americans—most of whom are far from wealthy—were taxed at 100%, it wouldn't cover Mr. Obama's deficit for this year.

I've boarded the DOOM train. We are on a ballistic trajectory to a collapse. We will never get the Federal government to reign in spending and stop debasing the currency in time. Too many zombies out there with the ability to vote.

The fact of the matter is that the Obama Administation has nothing to do with Presidentin’...and everything to do with lootin’ the Federal Treasury.

It just takes a set to recognize it and call it out for what it is...

He’s obviously given up all hope that the economy will significantly improve before the election. In such an environment he is going for a naked class warfare play which clearly he thinks he can win.

In 1986, 1991 and 1993 the Progressive Democrats in Congress made the same pledge 0 did yesterday. Give us more tax money and we will cut the deficit. In 1986, 1991 and 1993 Taxpayers coughed up the money and the Congress increased spending exponentially and the tax payers got more debt then ever.

0 is merely signing the 4th verse of the same old DC Progressive song. It is just another lie.

How about this time we try something that has NEVER been tried by DC, we try to balance the budget strictly on budget cuts with NO tax increases?

Giving more tax money to DC is the equivalent of giving a heroin addict free drugs thinking it will “cure” his addiction

0’s true colors were on full display: This was a vicious and stupidly dishonest speech by a vicious and stupidly dishonest man.

What part of “the country is broke” and “the welfare state is unaffordable” does this evil Alinskyite cretin not understand?

Frankly, he doesn't care. The task he set himself is the ruination of the United States, and by those lights he's doing a smash-up job.
