Presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Tuesday rejected the notion that President Obama was not born in the United States, emphasizing that "I think the citizenship test has been passed."
The former Massachusetts governor, in an interview with CNBC's Larry Kudlow, said he thought there were legitimate reasons to want Mr. Obama out of the White House - but that "birther"-inspired claims were not credible.
"I think the citizenship test has been passed. I believe the president was born in the United States. There are real reasons to get this guy out of office," Romney said, the day after formally announcing the formation of a presidential exploratory committee.
Despite the fact that disputes over Mr. Obama's citizenship have long since been discredited, the issue has been in the news lately as Donald Trump, the billionaire, reality television star and potential presidential candidate, has made the media rounds espousing his newly-adopted birtherist perspective.
Romney, however, chose to hit Mr. Obama on his economic record rather than his U.S. citizenship.
"Look, when it comes to the economy, the president has been incompetent," Romney t old Kudlow. "He just hasn't done what is necessary to get Americans back to work. You've got roughly 20 million Americans who stopped looking for jobs or can't find work, and that's inexcusable in a nation that's as productive and innovative as this nation."
"Overwhelmingly, his people come from academics and from politics," Romney continued, of the president's staffing choices. "He doesn't...he doesn't have the confidence in the private sector people that you need to give him the help on the economy that he needs."
When asked about the health care reform bill he enacted while serving as governor of Massachusetts, Romney reiterated his standard line of defense on the issue.

Sure Willard,Now go play with your Rats.
There are probably several million children born to GI’s and mothers from Europe, Japan, Korea and Vietnam who are not considered Natural Born US Citizens; all of whom are considered U.S. Citizens with all the attendant privileges; EXCEPT THE ELIGIBILITY TO RUN FOR POTUS.
This is likely news to everyone whose children have one US Citizen parent and were born in the USA.
Anchors away babies;)
1) Drop out of the primaries earlier rather than later.
Throw your support to a Conservative & work from the sidelines in a kingmaker role.
2) Deny that Romneycare is a success. Renounce it plain and simple in no uncertain terms.
“I was wrong, but I did what has been proved to be wrong because I thought at the time that it was the right thing to do. I'm sorry.”
3) Work in your strong states to get out the vote and counter Democrat talking points at every turn.
Be public. Be firm.
That's the only way that you will avoid becoming a footnote in American political history.
Mitt Romney: Somewhere in Hollywood, a game show is missing its host.
Seen the long form B/C
Why are you still in Politics?
Nobody likes you but Democrats.
I have a friend who has reached a similar conclusion. His mother was British and remained a British citizen during all her years here in the U.S.
AND had her son not been made an American citizen by operation of U.S. law, he’s pretty sure she would have been glad to have him grow up here as a British citizen as well.
So not only would he have not been a natural born citizen, he would have had to apply for naturalization when he got old enough to realize that his British mum was nuts on not wanting to be an American.
As I recall his father was born in Mexico to Mormon parents that fled to that country to avoid Ameican anti-polygamy laws.
Romney’s answer makes him sound so out of touch and uninformed on the words of the US Constitution. You must be a natural born citizen of the US to be President of the US.Could he not have taken the time to read the simple pertinent clause in Article 2 of our Constitution?
If there were no secrets, it would have been proudly displayed already. I think that the real birth certificate just might say something that contradicts the biography given out to the public....which, by the way, is weirder than what the truth probably is. From the beginning, his life story just sounded a little odd to me and I trust my female instincts.
At the bottom of the article they have boxes to click to ‘rate’ the article.
“What’s your take - Awesome - Shocking - Infuriating - Important”
They forgot STUPID!
The "test" is natural born citizenship, and I have not seen clear and convincing evidence.
How does he know??? Jerk!
Citizenship aside, he is as unquestionably NOT an American in terms of his patriotism.
There was a thread in FR about a year ago that Mitt’s father had not been naturalized at the time of Willard’s birth IIRC.
A lot of the Romney bots are anti-birthers. A lot of those Republicans that bashed the Patriots against Amnesty are the same Romney-bots bashing those who want Obama to show his birth certificate.
What bold leadership! He should consider running for POTUS...as a Democrat.
