Updated: 6:07 AM, April 11, 2011 The unsurprising twist about the weekend's Masters coverage on CBS is that Saturday's was no different from Sunday's. When Tiger Woods was behind by five, Saturday, or tied at the top, yesterday, it was still mostly all Woods, mostly all the time. What TV now does best is beat things to death. Doesn't matter who or what it is -- Charlie Sheen or Charles Barkley -- TV is going to squeeze it dry. The Masters used to be televised by CBS as one of golf's majors, as special. Follow the leaders, show a few shots from old and recent champs, but no one's bigger than the Masters or the Until Tiger Woods. And Saturday, the Masters became just another tournament in which Tiger Woods, plus some other guys, played. The same pathetic formula. It didn't matter that Woods's once-incomparable game has been on the fade. It didn't matter that Woods was five strokes off the lead. It didn't matter that eight players were ahead of him. It didn't matter that Woods in the last two years has been self-scandalized, proven to be the opposite of the wife and kids family-first guy, nothing close to the greatest-human-ever image that TV carved for him -- and still held tightly to. It didn't matter that he's a never-could-hide-it and still-can't brat on the golf course. And it didn't matter that this was the Masters. The most live video, Saturday, was devoted to Woods. The most taped video was devoted to Woods. The most talk was devoted to Woods. It became so silly -- rather, it stayed so silly -- that when co-leader Jason Day appeared in a taped interview, it was to hear him talking about Woods!CBS Masters art of following Woods

I saw both Tiger and Rory McIlroy's interviews after their rounds. That 21 year old kid has more class in his pinky finger than Tiger does in his whole body. I'm sure all he wanted to do was crawl in a hole and die. Yet he gave very thoughtful, mature answers. Tiger, being interviewed by Bill Macatee was totally rude as if it was torture for him to be answering questions from Macatee. He may be the greatest golfer to ever play the game. Too bad he has to be such a jerk.

I cannot even stand to look at him without thinking about the events of last year and his “apology.”
Sunday Tiger was in contention and the only American in position to win so I understand the coverage. However, Tiger’s interview showed just what a jerk he’s become.
Thanks for finding this article. This is exactly the way I felt watching the Masters over the weekend. Up until the Masters, NBC has been doing the golf tournaments this season. NBC had no problem treating Tiger as he deserves - he isn’t playing well, hasn’t played well for over a year and won’t be featured until he is. Instead, we had the opportunity to get to know the passle of young guns who are coming up in golf.
Tiger seems to have learned nothing over the past year and a half. He still uses filthy language on the course, is brusque with his caddy and behaves very petulantly in other ways. Anyone else would know to be on a charm offensive - Woods is just offensive.
The top 3 were gracious, humble young guys. Tiger is a jerk and is a poor, although accurate representation of a lot of Americans.

EVERY Golf Tournament that he's a participant in is sickeningly focused on "The Great Black Hope"; you miss coverage of the Leaders, the new Pro's who are in contention, and see replays of his PAST successes.....they show replays of the exciting stuff that is going on, while focusing on his "Blackness".
I no longer watch golf if he's playing....it's too over-the-top 24/7 Black promotional opportunity, NOT golf.
I was at the gym this morning, TV’s all over the place on ESPN. They were showing more Tiger ‘highlights’ than anything else.
The winner birdied the last 4 holes to win the Masters and all ESPN wanted to talk about was Tiger Woods. It was sickening to watch ...
I thought the EXACT same thing when I watched it live. Every other player they interviewed that day showed grace, humility and appreciation, except for Tiger. Luke Donald, Adam Scott and that the other young Aussie all knew that they were so close, but probably weren't going to win and they still managed a smile - again, except for Tiger.

CBS can’t stomach that their golfing idol has seen better days.
ABC/ESPN does the same thing with its Indy Car coverage, which they try to turn into a de facto Danica Patrick reality show.
The gulf created between her hype and her abilities is comical, and has made me a big Simona de Silvestro fan.

Become? He’s always been that way - the sports journalists (is that an oxymoron?) kept it hidden, much like other “journalists” do with politicians.
I have a possibly controversial comment about the winner, Charl Schwartzel, - I think he is directly responsible for Rory McIlroy’s meltdown. Schwartzel is a very slow player and repeatedly threw McIlroy and Angel Cabrera off their rhythm with his slow pace. Had McIlroy been paired with a more serene golfer than Cabrera, or one with a slower pace, it might not have mattered. But Cabrera was clearly annoyed by forced waiting due to Schwartzel’s slowness.
Jack is still the greatest - and always will be - for more reasons than just the total number of majors won. Talk about a class act.
