Jake Tapper Claims Vietnam Swift Boat Vets Now Call Selves 'River Boat' Vets

ABC News White House reporter Jake Tapper wrote on Twitter this evening:

"Talking to a Vietnam Navy Vet who says Swift Boat veterans now call themselves "River Boat" vets bc of 2004 campaign."

Tapper did not explain what about the 2004 campaign--John Kerry or the group that challenged Kerry's Vietnam service record, the Swift Boats Vets and POWs for Truth--have caused them to change how they describe themselves.

There were more than two... Just off the top of my head, I can remember that in addition to the PBR and the PCF, there was also the "Monitor" and "Zippo" boats. Suggested reading on the subject: Brown Water, Black Berets.

It's been a while since I read it, but I was advised by a friend the was part of Task Force 117/Tran Hung Dao, that the book was about as accurate as any he had ever read...

Yes ole Wade and I exchanged some emails during the campaign...what a phony POS he was....then getting sent to prison for kiddie porn.... Got to say I was elated and followed the trial and had a date set on my puter to remind me the day he had to report to prison. I had a wonderful day that day...I imagine ole wade didn't share that experience..

Glad you found it... When you read the section about Lt. Dale Meyerkord, it will show you just how gutsy some of these men were. I wore a memorial bracelet honoring him until it was so then it was ready to break into two pieces. Plus, as an added bonus, you'll get to learn how I came to use the phrase "I'd shoot at a man that wears a hat like that!" :-)

Now I bet you're really anxious for that book to arrive! Sincerely though, I think you'll find it to be a rather informative read, as well as one that increases you admiration for them all the more.

I just remember those two from the year I spent in Vietnam, 1967-68. I went thru SERE training with 72 PBR sailors.

The Monitors carried the big guns and had steel pipe grids mounted on standoffs to act as armor - the pipes would set off the RPGs before they hit the bulkheads. The Zippo boats had flametrowers - thus Zippo after the lighter...
