Rove warns Republicans: Shutdown could boost Obama

Washington (CNN) – Furloughed jobs, interrupted services, and the potential economic ramifications aside, top Republican strategist Karl Rove is warning a government shutdown is likely to strengthen President Obama's hand as he heads into his reelection campaign.

In his weekly polling memo, Rove notes the 1995 government shutdown bolstered President Clinton's image in the eyes of voters as a strong leader, positioning him for a relatively easy reelection victory one year later.

"The shutdowns helped improve Clinton's political standing, boosting both his approval rating and perceptions of him as a strong leader," writes Rove. "At the time, poll watchers noted that, 'the only time Clinton's ratings have improved substantially the past year as a result of his actions has been when he adopted a strategy of confrontation.'"

Rove reports Clinton's approval rating saw nearly a double-digit jump during the 1995 government shutdown and continued to climb as the reelection campaign began in earnest.

And they are not for tax dollars being used for abortion.

Nailed it. That’s what this entire budget meltdown has been reduced to:

Planned Parenthood and Abortion.

I don’t know which side decided to hinge this whole government shutdown possibility over abortion - but God Bless whoever did it.

Now. If only the pubbies have the stones to hold fast. But I fear they will cave in.

I fear for the future of our country.

>> perceptions of him as a strong leader

The difference is that Clinton was a leader. The man-child in the White House runs away from work and responsibility. He’d rather watch hoops than govern and he doesn’t even know the meaning of leadership.

Rove needs to be hammering on Obozo and not sucking up to him, except that Rove is part of the Republicrat establishment that needs to destroy America to rebuild it “the right way” (without all that free citizen nonsense).

Not only forgotten but what the hell, I’m sick of the lousy leftist democrats bully tactics. Shut it the hell down. We will fight them toe to toe in 2012. It only juices us up for the battle with those low lifes.

Rove is no longer considered a political genius. It was Bush’s handling of the financial crisis, border reform, tort reform, etc., that resulted in Obama’s big win. Bush took Rove’s advice and stood for nothing and look where it got us.

He’s getting to be as predictable and as big a monkey sh@t thrower as Chuckie Schumer.

This man is irking my last nerve.

Wish he would just go away already. He brings nothing to the table, nothing at all.

Rove warns Republicans: “It seems I’ve misplaced my spine”

You'd think he'd wait untill getting elected to office before misplacing that.

This isn’t 1995 Karl. This country is bankrupt. The Reps don’t control Congress. And in 1996 the Reps retained control over Congress. If I had to choose, I will take control over Congress to the WH. The Reps should take control over the Senate in 2012.

It’s like a marital disagreement involving an abusive spouse, who is willing to destroy the family to win the fight, knowing the other will capitulate to not go that far. Absurd vicious accusations are hurled, confusing the kids and turning them against the sane spouse, who gives in to end the abuse and destruction, and proceeds to do whatever he can to make things work out - knowing at some point the whole thing may self destruct when it gets beyond human limits.

The Dems know there is no more money, but the credit card still works so they’re going to plunge further into debt, compromising by buying only sale items, and turning the ignorant majority against the responsible Repubs - who know the only options are wait it out, crash and burn, or civil war.

Stock up.

I don’t think there’s any value in shutting the government down. There is value in cutting the spending.

The Constitution intends for the US to have a functioning, constrained, efficient government. That is the goal.

If there is a Republican PR machine, they need to get out in front of this. On alleged conservative talk radio in Chicago, callers were slamming the repubs for making Planned Parenthood i.e. abortion i.e. “social issues”...the focus. Why doesn’t everyone have to tightened their belts? Cut their spending? Why didn’t the Dems pass a budget when they had control of all three branches of government? Don’t let the MSM turn this into a social issue/abortion argument. It plays right into the Dems hands.....

While the Palin Trump wing of GOP candidates show
balls criticizing Obama and his criminal undocumented gang
of usurpers,
the Rove Romney Soros Wing tries to protect
their Obama (just like in 2008)
attacking the ineligibility and ObamaCARE issues
for the ineligible Romney.

“The difference is that Clinton was a leader.”

What the heck have you been smoking?!? Clinton was the exact same as O in so many ways it is scary. The difference was that the economy was not in the dumps like it is now and there was no counter to the constant MSM drum beat of “poor federal works suffering because of mean old Republicans”. Don’t you remember that it was during the government shut down that the Monica “blue dress” thing happened?
