In his definitive 2010 biography of Barack Obama, "The Bridge," New Yorker editor David Remnick features a photograph of a dapper young Barack Obama sitting between his grandparents on a Central Park bench.

The bench is real. The grandparents are real. The wall behind them is real. Barack Obama is not. He has been conspicuously photoshopped in. Who did this and why remains as much a mystery as Obama's extended stay in New York.

In late October 2007, the New York Times ran a telling article on Barack Obama headlined, "Obama's Account of New York Years Often Differs From What Others Say."

Given that he was an announced candidate for president, and an underdog at that, the Times expected Obama to welcome the chance to reconcile his account in his memoir, "Dreams from My Father," with the accounts of those who knew him.

"Yet," lamented the newly neutered Times, "he declined repeated requests to talk about his New York years, release his Columbia transcript or identify even a single fellow student, co-worker, roommate or friend from those years."

A campaign spokesman, Ben LaBolt, offered a painfully lame explanation for Obama's reticence, "He doesn't remember the names of a lot of people in his life."

The video was used as the basis for the thread, but it was quickly discovered that the video used an obviously Photoshopped image of the Grandparents together for its premise. Cashill would have benefited from perusing that thread before posting his article.

When I first saw that photo of Obama in the park with his grandparents many months ago, I wondered who took the picture?

Was it Obama's mother? An Obama friend? Was it Obama himself?

If Obama took the picture, maybe he couldn't figure how to set up the camera on delay so that he could be in the picture also.

If the picture is a fake, then I don't know why a person would make such a fake. Maybe Obama was indeed in the park with his grandparents, but there was no way to prove it unless he let someone use photoshop to put his image in the picture so that he could use the picture for political campaign purposes.

I just wish Obama would tell us who took the picture and be done with it.

I did watch the video - there was no explanation for the knee. Also, the logic he utilized for the streak that appeared on the left side of the grandfather’s shoulder doesn’t hold much water with me. You don’t add an image to a portion of the photo you are editing and ‘drag’ it to the final location of the image - using transparency or layers during the edit would not produce such an effect.

Not only did I watch the video from the original FR thread, I went out and found as many versions of the photo on the net as I could and loaded them into Photoshop. I could never find any evidence to back up the claim that the version with Obama was Photoshopped. YMMV.

I could never find any evidence to back up the claim that the version with Obama was Photoshopped.

You must not have been looking very hard, as there are numerous indications of Photoshop.

Just for starters, that streak on the wall to the left of Dunham, that is not actually on the wall, is obviously a photograph artifact, and probably Photoshop artifact.

...so much so that the Chicago Tribune version Photoshopped it out.

So, at least one of these pics have been Photoshopped, if only to clean up the artifact.

That artifact, and many other manipulations show up brightly on the Error Level Analysis of the photo, the numerous bright highlights suggesting the areas of the photo have been worked on.

I’ve always found the most interesting aspect of this photo to be that Barry’s wearing a wedding ring...in [purportedly] 1981.

It’s also visible in some of the Occidental time-frame “Look at me, I’m a pothead” photos.

And in the large group family photo during his first trip to Kenya.

In all of those photos, it really looks just like the wedding ring he wears now - or does from a distance. Too bad there has not turned up a closeup of the pre-Michelle ring; closeups of the one he wears now show it to be an intricately carved semi-wide band. IIRC it has Indonesian figures carved into it.

I don’t have a link - sorry - but within the past few months I saw this same photo somewhere on the web, with the wedding band photoshopped out, leaving his hand rather gnarled-looking. Perhaps too many people had been noticing the ring? Another “oopsie”?
