Disgraced politician John Edwards is said to be deeply depressed - to the point of being suicidal - over the prospect of a criminal trial that could end with him being jailed if found guilty.
The 57-year-old former Presidential candidate reportedly told a close friend: 'I won't go to jail. I'd kill myself first!'
He has lost 20lb in the last year and is a 'broken spirit,' reports the National Enquirer.
According to the Enquirer, a close source said: 'I think John is suicidal. He knows that if he's indicted, prosecutors will try to get him to serve jail time and make an example of him.
'He's absoluetly despondent over the fear of prison.
'Over the last year, he's lost about 20lb and friends are concerned that he's escaping reality with booze.

This guy was Gore’s VP candidate - “a heartbeat away from the Presidency”, had the two of them been elected.
I always thought he was the ideal candidate for Democrats, as he epitomized (and capitalized on) Democrat voters’ obsession with getting their hands on the “free stuff” confiscated for them from taxpayers and handed over in exchange for their votes.
Character, honesty, shame, integrity... none of this has any relevance whatsoever to the typical Democrat.
It’s all about the “free stuff” and John Edwards was their man.
He was perfect, and the Democrats are not lamenting his failings, they are only lamenting that he got caught.

He sure picked a bad year to be the white, anglo-saxon, democrat male candidate.
Spouses are allowed to testify against each other. The law is that they cannot be compelled to do so. That is, there is no "contempt" or similar sanction that can be used should a spouse refuse to testify; hence a court won't order a spouse to testify. But they darn well might ask, and a prosecutor might use certain devices to encourage "voluntary" cooperation.
