I don't understand. What are they going to meet about?
I would think the whole benefit of not believing would be the ability to sleep in on Sunday morning and not have to go to meetings.

They could just discharge them from the service, to enjoy their specialness in civilian life.

What are they going to meet about? About how their "rights" are being violated by Christians in the military and how to restrict religious liberty among military personnel so they will no longer have to be "discriminated" against?
To: UndauntedR
How can they defend their and our God given rights if they don’t believe in God? Time for a new career.

Atheist soldiers? Nothing new, no big deal.
Filing papers to get special recognition? The soldiers are, I suspect, being used.
Someone who hates the military (and America) is likely behind this.
Who, one wonders?

Obviously not combat soldiers. If they were they would not be athiest. A better idea would be to change their MOS to combat ready. There that fixes the problem.

Yet another difference between the US Army and the US Marine Corps.
This sort of thing would get your ass kicked in the 'Corps.
This is not a criticism, just an acknowledgement that the US Army is traditionally made up of citizen soldiers. Namely, where the draftees go in times of conscription.
I personally believe that there ought to be a broader tolerance in the US Army of these fundamental freedoms, meaning that the US Army is where the atheists and Wiccans and homosexuals who choose to serve their country belong, in addition to the average Joe and Jane from Main Street USA. The US Army was originally intended to be comprised mainly of regional brigades assembled from the average citizen at least minimally fit for military service.
Understand clearly, however, this 'minimally-fit' criteria has no place in the Marine Corps.

Wha ...?
What’s to discuss if you have no beliefs? Sports? Weather?

Jason Torpy is the president of the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers.Gotta love the dig they take at those outside their own religion.

work with the Army's chaplains and have their gatherings listed in a bulletin of religious services. Uh... you're atheists. You have no "religious services."

In the Armed Forces EXCEPT the National Guard (Army or Air)
I, (NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.
How did they recite this? Sounds like dishonorable discharge time.

Maybe I am different but being on the receiving end of hostile fire in Iraq strengthened my belief in God which has not diminished since coming home. I expect to get some fire from atheist over this but so what.
