KABUL, Afghanistan Anger over the burning of the Muslim holy book at a Florida church fueled a second day of deadly violence half a world away in Afghanistan, where demonstrators set cars and shops ablaze Saturday in a riot that killed nine protesters, officials said.
The church's desecration of the Quran nearly two weeks ago has outraged millions of Muslims and others worldwide, fueling anti-American sentiment that is further straining ties between the Afghan government and the West.
The uproar even brought violence to the normally peaceful northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif on Friday, when a crowd of protesters apparently infiltrated by insurgents stormed a U.N. compound in an outpouring that left four Afghan protesters and seven foreign U.N. employees dead.
The Quran was burned March 20, but many Afghans only found out about it when Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned the desecration four days later.

And who were the moneychangers? They were in his Father’s house, they were his own people.
I agree. It's VERY important not to do anything that may disrespect the muslims.
This is a "religion" that riots and kills when their "holy book" is desecrated. It seems the "moslem street" can be easily manipulated when their religion is dishonored. They have dozens of "holy sites" We have megatons of hog manure. Does anyone else sense an opportunity for asymmetric warfare?
***From a religous standpoint, you’re probably right. However, from a constitutional standpoint, buring the Koran is protected speech.***
I am not arguing that one bit.
Koran burning is a tactical masterstroke.
Get 'em clustered up. Then cluster bomb them.
I like it.
I think these people have just proved the pastor’s point.
If your goal is just to piss them off, burn Korans by the truckload. I really could care less.
I am more interested in spreading the Gospel. You want to please God? Stand in front of a Mosque and preach the good news. You’ll make God happy and can still be happy about pissing off Muslims.
I agree with you on the Koran being book of fiction. I am having a hard time trying to figure out the rioting and the destruction of property in their home country. I do not go and set fire to my home or my neighbors business because some moron burned a Bible in Donkey Fart, Afghanistan. What is the thinking behind that. They don’t think that is the whole problem. Let those idiots burn the whole country to the foundations. The CIA ought to give these people a bunch of explosives and then tell them somebody burnt a Koran in Texas. Sit back and let them destroy themselves. Bring our guys home.
Kinda like the Watts riots eh?
Nuke every flat place, valley and mountain in this country. Put the world out of its misery.
Or are you saying Christian should not burn the Quran but everyone else can? or no one should because we shouldn't insult Islam?
You totally lost me here.
For the past two millenia, Torahs have been burned by Muslims, Christians, Roman imperial soldiers, often with rabbis wrapped in them. The Roman soldiers are no more. The Christians are better behaved nowadays. As for the Muslims...well...
INDEED.
Demonized folks often think little, if at all.
And very rarely very rationally, congruently, logically.
Who is to say that the next thing they'll be outraged over, won't be a thread right here on Free Republic?
If burning Korans helps A. get rid of the UN and B. exposes Mooselibs for what they are.
In America we have “free speech” free means if someone wants to pee in a jar andput a bible in it so what.
If we want to burn Korans, or pictures of Moose-a-hamad so what.
We don’t have to be affraid of them and we can still act free.
You folow what your faith teaches you and let others follow theirs.
You cant destroy the word of God by burning a book.
And, you can just print another one.
An acquaintance on Facebook just posted a Huff Post article that said Terry Jones needed to “be taught a lesson” since his burning prompted the killing of our military personnel. I posted a rather lengthy statement that basically said that the article was one of selective outrage. I said that while I disagreed with Jone’s action, the Saudi Arabian burning of Bibles as a state practice was not mentioned in the article. In fact, Christians here do not kill when Bibles are burned, “artwork” desecrating Christ is funded by taxpayers, or churches and Christians are burned in Pakistan, Egypt and elsewhere. To denounce Jone’s actions with nary a mention of recent atrocities in Arab countries against Christians suggests that such Muslim violence is acceptable or excusable.
She wrote back there has been too much killing in the name of religion. Of course, I would ask...who is doing the killing?
I read and article today by an aid worker in Afghanistan, who said it’s time for them to leave. That person’s point was that this was a mob of regular unarmed villagers who attacked, not the Taliban or a warlord’s henchmen. The weapons that they got were taken from their first victims, the UN guards. He stated if we now have to open fire on unarmed protesters in order to adequately protect themselves, it’s time to go.
We should get these aid groups out of harm’s way and then change the rules of engagement. The mullahs have been allowed to have it easy. They whip up their people and send them out to kill others and/or die in suicide attacks. Meanwhile, the Mullah’s stay safely behind. The new ROE should simply be that every Mullah who incites violence is to be treated as a terrorist in that war zone and as such, killed within a very short period of time afterwards, either by a Spec Ops “A Team” sniper, Predator drone missile or a GPS bomb dropped from 20,000 feet, or some other munition suitable to the occasion. If they incite violence from the mosque, it’s to be no longer treated as a place of worship, but as a military or terrorist command structure and taken out. If these ROEs were put into place, I have a feeling that we’d quickly find the Mullahs to be far less talkative with a corresponding drop in violence. That said, we must never forget what this religion is all about and protect ourselves accordingly.
It is on the list. They are working down to it.
jones now knows how Bush feels.
That, I think, is the value of Terry Jones' actions. It points out, vividly and unambiguously, how fracking crazy these people are.
I would have it spread to every street corner in America, put it all on youtube. I would like to see a ship go upwind of some radical Muslim country and release thousands of mylar helium balloons with a cartoon of Mohammad printed on the balloon and a partially burnt page of the Quran dangling from the string, so they drift all over the Islamic world, and let them riot until they are tired of rioting. Just to tell them the message that we no longer care if they get upset over somebody dissing Mo.
Pull out of Iraq and Afghanistan, and let them descend into savagery.
