WASHINGTON (AP) -- It could get harder to indulge in a double cheeseburger and fries without feeling guilty.
Menu labeling requirements proposed Friday by the Food and Drug Administration will require chain restaurants with 20 or more locations, along with bakeries, grocery stores, convenience stores and coffee chains, to clearly post the calorie count for each item on their menus.
"We've got a huge obesity problem in this country and it's due in part to excess calorie consumption outside the home," says Mike Taylor, FDA deputy commissioner for foods. "Consumers generally when you ask them say they would prefer to have that information."
The new rules will apply to menus, both in restaurants and drive-through lanes. They will also apply to vending machines if calorie information isn't already visible on the package.
The calorie counts will apply to an estimated 280,000 establishments and could be on menus by 2012. Required as part of health overhaul legislation signed into law last year, they are designed to give restaurant diners information that has long been available on packaged goods cooked at home. The FDA estimates that a third of calories are consumed by eating out.
But don't expect calorie shock when ordering at the movie theater, where a tub of popcorn can contain well north of a thousand calories - movie theaters are exempt, along with airplanes, bowling alleys and other businesses whose primary business is not to sell food, according to the FDA. Movie theaters pushed to be left out after guidelines published last year included them.
Alcohol will also be exempted, according to the agency. Margo Wootan, director of nutrition policy at the advocacy group Center for Science in the Public Interest, says that could be misleading to consumers.

Amen Brother HFCS is some evil crap! We should have stuck with coconut oil, best thing in the world for you. Of course they are forcing Monsanto Round up ready GMO’s on us. Population control anyone?
What ever happened to personal judgment and restraint? Why should some government agency tell me what is fattening? Why should some government agency tell me anything?
How about the people telling the government something for a change?
Memo to the FDA: Maybe we don’t want to know.
Plan one: Make you feel guilty about the food you eat.
If plan one don’t work go to plan two.
Plan two: Make food so expensive you can’t afford to eat.
Plan three: If you want a government discount on food
you have to vote for a democrat.
This is nothing more than a foot in the door for
government control on the consumption of food.
What part of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness
don’t these fools understand or do they understand and
they just cant stand anyone else being happy when they
are so miserable? I think I’ll go eat a dozen plain
glazed in honor of Mike Taylor.
I ate dinner at TGI Friday’s last night. Dragonfire
chicken and unsweetened iced tea. The table
next to me started with fried chicken nuggets
slathered in BBQ sauce and large glasses of cola.
The main meal arrived. Enormous quantities on
the plates. The food was inhaled with vigor. Dessert
was being served as a I paid my check. One
woman at that table easily tipped the scales at
350+ lbs. I eat at a restaurant daily and I’ve
lost 25 lbs over the last 2 years. It isn’t what is
on the menu. It is gluttonous over consumption.
The principal problem lies between the ears. Eat
like a pig on a regular basis and you will end up
that way.
Not a typical day. I do one long run on either Saturday or Sunday. I usually run in the 3 to 5 mile range 2 or 3 days during the week.
Exercise has a tendency to feel good as well. Why don't they push that?
The nice thing is all those people who eat the grilled chicken caesar salad or the pasta alfredo fettucini cream sauce will now realize, horror of horrors that they are consuming more calories than the guy eating a steak or a burger.
I still say it is idleness, not consumption. If you want to truly be fit and healthy, it requires a lot more calorie, protien, and fat consumption than what is recommended. A thin person that doesn’t move but eats very little is no healthier than a 250 pound manual laborer.

Yep.
You, I, and Aristotle make a fine team.
I can testify personally that jogging (I’m not quite up to running yet) does help keep the weight off.
“Yes, I am a point counter and I work for Weight Watchers.”
So am I but I do it because being slim is part of my lifestyle. I like being able to fit through a 2-0 door
and wash 10 pairs of jeans at a time. But still, no one
has the right to tell a person what to eat and whether
or not they can be a full figured lardball or not. It’s
their life and it’s right.
I work for Weight Watchers because I enjoy helping others begin their journey to a healthy lifestyle.
I said nothing about the government. I implied that it is up to the individual to embrace a change in their eating and activity habits.
Please take a chill pill.
Ya Thank??????????

I could use the standard canard of the supporters of increased cigarette or alcohol restrictions/taxes because I don't smoke/drink, or in this case eat out, this doesn't concern me, but I wont.........it should concern ALL of us even if it it doesn't personally effect us.
Like big fat people care about calories.
Most of us know what is and is not healthy, for the most part. We just don't always make the "right" choices.
That should be our right.
I'm a nonsmoker and don't like being around cigarette smoke. I don't, however, need the government to "help" me by forcing businesses to ban smoking. Let business owners elect to be smoking or nonsmoking establishments and let me decide whether or not to spend my money there.
This nanny state, tax and spend, we know better than you government has to end. Take back America, vote for real conservatives and back good candidates with your money and help. If we can’t get a better US Senate and President in 2012, we are well and truly doomed. I know too many Republicans turn out to disappoint us, but the TEA Party is keeping the heat on them and deserve our backing. Show up at any TEA Party events near you and join up. The TEA Party is the closest we have come to real patriots since 1776 and 1861 (yeah I’m a northerner).
Yeah, I missed that the first time around. Good catch.
Obamao continues on with his destruction of the country...
