Older lesbian, gay and bisexual adults in California are more likely to suffer from chronic physical and mental health problems than their heterosexual counterparts, a new analysis has found. They also are less likely to have live-in partners or adult children who can help care for them.
The research brief was based on data from the California Health Interview Survey, the nations largest state health survey, gathered in 2003, 2005 and 2007 by the Center for Health Policy Research at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Older gay and bisexual men ages 50 to 70 reported higher rates of high blood pressure, diabetes and physical disability than similar heterosexual men, according to the researchers. Older gay and bisexual men also were 45 percent more likely to report symptoms of psychological distress and 50 percent more likely to rate their health as fair or poor. In addition, one in five gay men in California was living with H.I.V. infection, the researchers found.
Yet half of Californias older gay and bisexual men lived alone, compared with 13.4 percent of older heterosexual men.
Older lesbian and bisexual women experienced similar rates of diabetes and hypertension compared with straight women of their age, but reported significantly more physical disabilities and psychological distress and were 26 percent more likely to say their health was fair or poor.
More than one in four older lesbian and bisexual women said they lived alone, compared with only one in five heterosexual women.

The media portray older gay men as happy, wise, healthy and successful. An illusion.
I don’t know if they’ve changed the name, but there is a condition known as gay bowel disease. Long before the AIDS epidemic. Also gays have a much higher propensity to smoke and do drugs and drink than the general population. So that may have something to do with this disparity. I find it interesting that my gay patients are no older than 50. I don’t think I’ve treated a 70 plus year old homosexual. At least not that they told me. Plus they were in their “prime” in the 1950s. NOT a cool time to be gay, so they probably were very discrete with their affairs. Mr.Sulu, yes. Has had a lover for decades. Not HIV positive. Robert Reed from Brady Bunch, not so much. He was the quintessential “ho” for gay sex and was extremely careless. In fact, he would pick up hustlers on the street, then threaten to kill them if they told anyone about “Mr.Brady”.
It sounds like homosexuality is more dangerous than smoking.
I thought homosexuals smoked....albeit not cigarettes.
That’s what happens when you spend your recreational time playing in a toxic waste canal.
I'm impressed with the researcher who thought to even investigate this question. Now we have to figure out why our society discriminates against gays by providing fewer children who will care for them in their old age - more research is needed.
Party hard when you’re young, and let the tightwad homophobes pay for you when you get old. Nice plan.

The Canadian Medical Association Journal (Jan. 11, 2000) said, “Among young gay and bisexual men in Vancouver, the HIV/AIDS epidemic has reduced life expectancy by up to 20 years.”
According to the New England Journal of Medicine (Feb. 12, 1998), smoking, on the other hand, reduces your life expectancy “7.3 years for men and 6.0 years for women.”

Well, also put in mind that smoking, alcoholism, and use of hard drugs is disproportionately high among gays as well, sadly enough.

Elton John hasn’t sounded all that happy to me in his recent statements.
>Mental issues? These sex deviates now have “mental issues”?<
Mental health issues 3x greater for homosexuality
