California's Assembly on Tuesday approved one of the most ambitious renewable energy programs in the nation. The bill requires the state's utilities to get 33 percent of their power from renewable resources like biomass, geothermal, solar and wind by 2020, up from the current target of 20 percent by 2010.
Currently, the state's three investor-owned utilities -- Pacific Gas & Electric, Southern California Edison, and San Diego Gas & Electric -- get 18 percent of their electricity from wind farms, solar power plants, geothermal, and biomass facilities, according to a new report from the California Public Utilities Commission. But they are on track to hit 20 percent by 2012.
The new standard, which passed the state Senate in February, is authored by State Senator Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, and backed by a coalition of environmental, labor and consumer groups. Governor Jerry Brown is expected to sign it within the next few weeks.
The legislation applies to all utilities in California, including municipal utilities in Santa Clara, Palo Alto and Sacramento.
"California again leads the way in energy policy," said Peter Miller, a senior scientist with the Natural Resources Defense Council. "This passage of this RPS legislation reinforces California commitment to building a diverse, clean and resilient energy portfolio that minimizes the impact of fossil fuel price spikes and enhances our energy independence and security."

It would appear that not enough jobs and productive people are leaving CA.
By the time these nuts get done with Cal. they will all be living in caves.
“When you find yourself in a hole - stop digging!!”
Liberals are incapable of grasping this concept....
Wanna make a financial killing? Build power plants just inside Nevada across from CA ...
These people are completely nuts. Increase energy costs for every productive enterprise (and citizen) in the state, and assume that’s going to lead to GOOD results.
Kommieland has a serious learning disorder. We used to call it stupid, but not anymore.
Where’s dragnut?
Thats the way to do it. Fix your state’s budget crisis by shrinking your tax base.
Yup. CA isn’t the place to be in a few years. Life there won’t be sustainable. No jobs, very high cost of living, very high taxes and energy prices.
Maybe that is the way the elite Liberals want it. Drive out all of the working class riff-raff.
LOL, where do you find all these great pics?
Yeah, dang Kommies.
I usually wait for JoeProBono to come through, but sometimes I have to do it myself.
Reason 4 million why California is fooked.
The really sad part about this is the intentional bypassing of the cleanest energy around - hydroelectric. I guess the fools are actually trying to raise costs, and in truth care not a bit about “green”.

It doesn't say where the municipal utilities are in meeting the requirements. I'm sure they all met the 2010 deadline and are leading the way. /s
That is the way it is everywhere. Here in Colorado too.
Nukes are pretty much off the list now as an option. More coal? No way.
Wind and Solar power aren’t going to keep those electric cars charged. Electric cars that we are supposed all be driving in a few years because they are “green.”
It sure seems like they are marching us all off the proverbial cliff. They really can’t be that stupid. They must have some evil plan to drive us all back to the stone age. I really haven’t figured out what they’ll gain by doing it. Or maybe they are just foolishly stupid.
Is that a real Dilbert?
