Gov. Sean Parnell's appointee for the panel that nominates state judges testified Wednesday that he would like to see Alaskans prosecuted for having sex outside of marriage.
The candidate, Don Haase of Valdez, also admitted under questioning by members of the Senate Judiciary Committee that his official resume failed to disclose his leadership role in Eagle Forum Alaska, which advocates for social conservative issues. He most recently was president of the organization, but resigned when he learned of his nomination, he said.

Paskvan: "Do you believe [adultery] should be a crime?"
Haase: "Yeah, I think it's very harmful to have extramarital affairs. It's harmful to children, it's harmful to the spouse who entered a legally binding agreement to marry the person that's cheating on them."
Paskvan: "What about premarital affairs -- should that be a crime?"
Haase: "I think that would be up to the voters certainly. If it came before (the state) as a vote, I probably would vote for it ... I can see where it would be a matter for the state to be involved with because of the spread of disease and the likelihood that it would cause violence. I can see legitimate reasons to push that as a crime."
Haase then asked why those questions were relevant.
"You are injecting yourself into the judicial system and so I think it's fair inquiry," Paskvan replied. "If you have a motivation to limit who would be advanced to a judgeship ... then your beliefs and attitudes are important," Paskvan said.

A judicial candidate can say he wishes pink elephants were banned, but as long as they are not he is duty bound to follow the law as it reads. That question looks like it was wholly evaded in this report.
Even if he believed this why would he tell them that?

I don’t agree with this guy, but just for argument sake: isn’t there a consensus that the state does have an interest in steering human sexuality toward the maintenance of stable families? Polygamy, gay sex, and abortion should all be illegal. Teens shouldn’t be handed birth control because it encourages them to be promiscuous. Is saying adultery should be illegal just a step too far, or is it somehow altogether different from these other issues?

Silly. “Police” and “Police State” are really creations of Twentieth Century. The laws against fornication, adultery and sodomy predate records. That is to speak to the level of the mentally febrile and morally challenged — such laws have thousands of generations of human development behind them.
Reputedly, there was an annual cluster of marriages and newborn arrivals among the Puritans about nine months after each New England winter. If they couldn’t keep it buttoned (zippers had not yet been invented) what hope is there for Alaskans? Parnell should withdraw this nomination on account of this idiot nominee’s gross misunderstanding of human nature and the limits of legitimate (pun intended) government authority.

No it was an incredibly weak argument equating these laws to radical muslims.
Well, if the argument is that the government has an interest in outlawing adult private behavior or contact because that behavior might harm others, this is right down that alley.
I say go for it. In for a penny, in for a pound.
So, let's invite the government into everyone's bedroom and private life, and see how much they can regulate. It's for the public good, dontchaknow?

You are ABSOLUTELY correct in that the State has the LEGAL authority to regulate sexual behavior. Some states could choose to regulate toward stable families and some states could choose to regulate toward non-stop bacchanal.
And, there's little doubt this man will not hold his appointment another 30 days. And, if by some weird turn of events the Governor of Alaska doesn't throw him overboard...the Governor himself will find his office at risk.

And since then we've had The Enlightenment and human liberty.
Ask yourself this question: Are YOU, PERSONALLY, willing to enforce such a law at the barrel of a gun? Are you willing to do so if there's a gun pointed back at you?
If you’re a Christian, sex before marriage is a sin. Wonder how many people can actually say they are free from that sin.
Good point. They are already letting violent criminals out early because of over crowding.

Adultery is still sin. It’s also very destructive for society.
