Most NOI “converts” used to be conVICTS in the prison system.

IIRC, Farrakhan belonged to that faction of the Nation of Islam that regarded Malcolm X as an apostate for renouncing racial hatred just before he was gunned down.

FWIW, I have known black people who are otherwise perfectly normal in their beliefs but who refer to the Nation of Islam and its leader only in hushed, respectful terms.
