Upon Governor Palin’s arrival Israelis will be celebrating the festivities of Purim.

Purim is the day Jews celebrate the story of Esther. It’s a very festive day. Kids dress up and food gifts are distributed to family and friends. People are very joyous and its common to see lots of singing and dancing in the streets. It’s customary to drink lots of wine on Purim. It is also a day of giving a lot of money to charity.

Everywhere in the world, including most of Israel, Purim began at sundown on Saturday night and ends after sundown on Sunday night.

In Jerusalem however, Purim takes place one day later and begins at sundown Sunday and ends after sundown Monday.

Governor Palin will join Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu for dinner in Jerusalem on Monday evening; The Purim dinner!

Perhaps, but his fervent Duncan Hunter raves preceded Sarah.

There was genuine fervor to proselytize even when there was no obvious front runner

.re: their article “Brazil Swooning over Dear Leader.!”

LOL! Yeah, only in Brazil is swooning demonstrated by throwing molotov cocktails and firing rubber bullets.

It's no wonder the Brazilian elites are slobbering; Obama is letting them drill in the Gulf while putting the boot to the necks of US oil companies.

Sarah could play a very good Esther. Like her, she’s good looking, smart and ethical.

“If God determined and will it, she will be the 45th President and there is nothing man nor spiritual force that can stop that, just as long as she stays on the right path which has been preordained for her.”

Biggest IF I’ve ever seen!

One thing that you can take to the bank is that Bibi will do everything in his power to help Sarah.

That post brought tears to my eyes...and I live just 15 minutes from Lebanon, OH. The photos of that rally were amazing and this email makes it even more special.

Sarah is our Esther.

God Bless Sarah.

God Bless America.

That is nice but I can have joy, remembrance and courage without alcohol

This is an obligation that like even fasting on Yom Kippur has exceptions for one's health if keeping this obligation.

Nevertheless, this is serious business that the Rabbis have struggled to interpret just like other serious issues. It does not give one license to replicate this behavior on any other day. A nice write up on this obligation can be read at My Jewish Learning.

Drinking on Purim

As with many mitzvot, there is a bit of mystery as to why. Purim is the result of very foolish people doing very foolish things. There is evil running through the behavior and actions of each and every character, at least from a modern perspective, though we are told that Esther and Mordechai are above reproach. Modern eyes recoil at the slaughter of Haman's family, just as Modern eyes recoil at the story of Saul and his pity on Agag that lead to his rejection by God. People reason through this and come away literally horrified.

How could God sanction genocide? The people of Israel in their time recoiled as well, and spared the lives of Canaanites as well as others that they were commanded to destroy utterly. We look back on this with the knowledge that if these people had listened and faithfully followed these commandments they would have been spared much agony. A fact that is emphasized in the story of Purim in that Haman is a direct descendent of Agag and his existence and evil are the results of earlier "compassion and pity" only serving the purpose of providing an enemy the opportunity to attack another day.

Yet, today, this same compassion resonates with our hearts and just as Abraham and Moses struggled with God in the face of witnessing well deserved retribution, we find ourselves torn and even celebrating the humanity of those who "failed" to do as they were told. The Amalekites became the one enemy that must not be allowed to live because they attacked the weak and the vulnerable in a cruel and cowardly way. Saul is damned for his kindness in this matter. Though it is more accurate to say that Saul was damned for his behavior that resembled the Amalekites in that he killed the weak and vulnerable without remorse but spared that which would benefit him as spoils of war. The result of this action was to heighten and prolong the enmity between the people of Israel and the descendants of Amalek. So, why would God command that Saul attempt this act, knowing in advance that he would fail??? What does this say about God? Samuel? Kings?

Just like in so many teachings of the Holy Bible, all is not what it seems. Samuel chose Saul to be King because he looked like and acted like a King. God told Samuel to avoid Kings because they would be cruel and oppress the people, their spirits and ultimately bring ruin and despair to the people of Israel, but then after saying this allowed Samuel to do this very thing. Why?

Ultimately some come away from this conundrum with the feeling that insanity lay here. That ultimately the Torah leads one to dead ends and that God is just a work of fiction because the message is superficially inconsistent and frankly inhumane.

Yet, the people of Israel now look back on each act of kindness in the face of the demands of fanatical devotion and say to the Islamic enemy who does not question and struggle, and see that from the very beginning, from Abraham asking God to spare the people of Sodom and Gamorrah to Moses pleading for the children of Israel in the name of "What will Egypt think?"

Israel's role has never been to be a world power in the likeness of Rome, but rather to be a light to the people of the world. It is this insane ability to look at the eyes of suffering of those who are strangers and outsiders and see themselves that is the very purpose and meaning of so much of the suffering that Jews have accepted and survived over the ages. It gives rise to Hillel's admonition and summary of the Torah in the words.. "What is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow: this is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation; go and learn"

So, it is in the utter stupidity of the drunk that we are called to experience and remember so that we might not look down our noses and forget that is behind this obligation. This observance is to stick out as odd, not normal. Yet, it also calls us to see through the eyes of those whom this is normal and remember so that we might be called to do the "right" thing even when it is not the "right" thing.

Some serious PDS going on in this thread. "Pissant Derangement Syndrome"

Deranged is a good description. But, as any other important moment in the life and lore of an institution, Pissant's passing from the scene is complex, immanent and personal to many folks here. He is a complex man. I have and many others have also attempted to help him channel his creativity and energy into something that wasn't a waste of time and energy and destructive to our community, but in the end, only hatred, frustration and disrespect seemed to be the level of exchange that surrounded his work.

I asked for people to be patient, and then I asked for the "powers that be" to ban him, and in this they followed their own hearts and tried as long as possible to let Pissant be Pissant, but in the end, it just could not continue.

Forgive us for wrestling with this, as we all see a bit of our own selves in this and we want to learn the lesson that he paid the price to teach.

That said, it is a better place without him, though I wish it could have been a place with him being rational. I will take a place where he is not and we don't have to cope with his PDS.

I saw that last reply before it was deleted by the mods. It was pretty bad.

One thing I’ve noticed in my six-plus years as a FReeper is that odd behavior follows the temporary banning of well-known screen names. The former Willie Green, once a sort of tinfoily but pleasant fellow, as far removed from any kind of grand government largesse as one could be, emerged as a monomaniacal, one-note drone for high speed rail, Amtrak and trains in general. Not the same person, imho. The same happened in my opinion with the former B-Chan and many others whose screen names escape me at the moment.

How this occurs is not something I’d be able to spell out, but I have heard repeatedly of people with old signup dates and large posting histories being offered money for their screen names. Maybe some old timers continued to bear a grudge and deliberately traded their FR identities for compensation?

Maybe that explains the odd behavior of our Pissant? It was almost like he was being coached by another banned FReeper who was quite obviously an operative and made no bones about it, who would benBob J, reputedly of RightHaven infamy, who was zotted after threatening to sue JR right here on FR, lol, I saw that one happen, too. Talk about chutzpah. That was the most well-deserved and righteous zot I’ve ever seen here, and I’ve seen quite a few.

The long and short if this is that there are a lot of games and scheming going on with certain identities here. At least that is the impression with which I’ve been left, and Sarah Palin inspires most of it of late, all to the negative.

I don't believe any of this. Pissy has always had a certain feel and bullheadedness. He got frustrated that folks just didn't see things the way he did.

Ultimately, he began to cling to those who seemed to support his ideas not noticing that he had made himself indistinguishable from the DUmmies.

What is also clear is how ineffective his efforts were. Just like the Alaska Bloggers, ultimately, hate spewed in attempting to "take down" a person who does not richly deserved this rebounds on the source.

Folks who see FR as a territory to be "owned" or controlled have one after the next been disabused of this perspective.

People come here to make sense of the world, not to have opinions pressed upon them. The perspective that it represents provides boundaries for a certain mentality to exist here and not be shouted down as in so many other places. Yet, even here, especially here, we have boundaries. Boundaries because every word is "on the record" and will be used against the whole Conservative movement and boundaries because only civil and rational discussion is worth the time it takes to read and participate.

People think they can buy influence, but in all reality, you have to have a message and it resonates or it doesn't. Its that simple. FR is a nexus of analysis and on some levels this is quite scholarly. As a group, we are not easily fooled, though each of us has been the fool more than once.

Some here folks live to find moles and provocateurs, useful idiots and agents who might attempt to play such games, where would they find their fun if there weren't a stream of volunteers to test them? Its all part of the mix.

Pissant was one of us. This is why so many second, third and fourth chances. But, ultimately, he became a stranger who's actions could only seen as malice and even that carried some value, but in the end, you have to understand that he was driving folks away, heck I was considering just avoiding him by avoiding FR and that is what the mods must respond to no matter what or this forum will be lost for all, and they did.

There are altogether too many hidden things needing the lid blown off of in the country today, corruption is seeping in from all sides and seemingly all quarters. We need all the help we can get, imho.

I’ve seen what I’ve seen as far as well-known FR screen names with long posting histories returning from a temporary banning completely changed and advocating things that are somewhat at odds with the stated mission of FR, dalight.

Does this apply to the former FReeper “Pissant?” I do not know, hence the use of the word “maybe.”

The comparison between Queen Esther and Saint Sarah was made some time ago on FR.

This is an ongoing list of historical, popular, Biblical, and fictional people that Sarah Palin has been compared to on FR:
