UN OKs Libya airstrikes, no-fly zone

UN OKs Libya airstrikes, no-fly zone Military action could follow within hours; Gadhafi tells The U.N. Security Council authorized a no-fly zone over Libya and called for Arab states and others to use "all necessary measures" to protect civilians from attacks by Moammar Gadhafi's forces.

The resolution passed 10-0 with five abstentions.

The resolution establishes “a ban on all flights in the airspace of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya" while excluding an occupation force. It also calls for freezing the assets of the Libyan National Oil Corp. and the central bank because of links to Gadhafi.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe flew to New York Thursday to press the case for speedy Security Council approval.

The world is "living one of its great revolutions that changes the course of history," Juppe told the Security Council just before the vote.

The United States, France and Britain pushed for speedy approval because Gadhafi's forces are advancing toward opposition-held Benghazi. The Libyan leader vowed Thursday night to oust the rebels from their eastern stronghold.

Thousands of anti-Gadhafi protesters cheered and let off fireworks on Friday to celebrate the vote. Al Jazeera television showed the crowd firing guns in the air, setting off fireworks and waving flags from the monarchy era in celebration.

This is a mistake.

Ghaddafi is an evil idiot who cares only about his personal wants and needs.

He will be replaced with an evil smart person who will be serious about jihad.

Gadhafi has the momentum in putting down this uprising. The UN vote will only embolden him to act with more swiftness and end it quickly.

Depending on how quickly and robustly this no fly zone and airstrikes are used, Kadaffi may well lose the momentum in his offensive. Without his airpower, he's lost a major component of his offensive power. If airstrikes are used on his ground forces, he could well be doomed though chances are airstrikes will only be used on air defense positions. But without air assets, he will not be able to move on Benghazi without and more Libyans will likely now be emboldened to join the fight. I think this will turn the tide against Kadaffi. It may not be his end, but it will at least push back some of the gains he's made and return the situation to at least a stalemate. We'll see.

Obama didn’t cave, he just ceded leadership to the Brits and French. Remember, it was the anointed one who told Qadaffi he had to go. Then, after putting our credibility on the line, he fiddled for 2 weeks while Qadaffi regained the edge. The dumbass should have kept his mouth shut if he didn’t mean it but I think he’s naive enough to believe he actually has some credibility somewhere and his word should mean something. Doofus (O, not you).

Libya bought six Foxtrot class submarines from the Soviets back in the 80s.Only two are presumed to be left and those are thought to be no longer operational. There were rumors that one was being refitted back in 2003 however.
The Foxtrot class is a seriously obsolete diesel/battery boat with three screws that are noisy as Hell.
So why am I so afraid that somewhere out there one is stalking the Enterprise?
When I was in the Navy back in the 70s it was almost routine for any decent sub captain to “get” the carrier during war games.
Invading Libyan airspace during their civil war...just saying

The U.N. made George Bush jump through hoops, yet they condone obama’s actions in a few days?

There is something fishy here. I’m not smart enough to know what.

The resolution establishes “a ban on all flights in the airspace of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya" while excluding an occupation force

It excludes occupation force. We've seen UN resolutions and no-fly zones drag on for years and despots (hussein) survive. If Libya just uses ground forces to rout out resistance then what good is a no-fly zone? Particularly when the last town of fighters is about to get slaughtered tonight. I am not sure what impact this will have except to get some of our jets shot down.

Not at all. Last year they had some woman on TV and she was complaining that there are still tree branches on her front yard and she was still waiting for the government to clean them up.

Horror stories like hers are all over the place. It's all Bush's fault.

It's not that 0bama wants it, it's that the Arab league wants it. They don't like Gadaffy.

Two weeks ago this could have been justified, but now it’s all about Obama’s politics.... he needs a “Wag the Dog” event.

“What happens if Iran should side with Qaddafi?”

Now that, I could get behind.

But, alas, Iran’s puppets are the ones fighting Qaddafi.
