Posted on 03/17/2011 1:23:41 PM PDT by Scythian

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is calling for a comprehensive safety review at the 104 nuclear reactors in the U.S. in the wake of the Japanese disaster.

The president is asking the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to examine nuclear plants to ensure they can withstand earthquakes and other disasters. Obama said lessons can be learned from the unfolding nuclear disaster caused by last week's earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

In televised remarks Thursday, The president said U.S. officials do not expect harmful levels of radiation to reach the West Coast of the continental U.S., Hawaii or Alaska. He repeated the statement for emphasis.

Somebody told him he needed to take this action.

dumb0 doesn’t have an original thought in his head, other than where to take his next vacation.

I can’t fault him for this, but there are about a million other things I can.

Entirely appropriate course of action.

Fair point. I'd have a lot more confidence in this if it didn't come from an Administration infested with Gaia-worshiping leftists. I have to believe that regulatory capture/justification of existence is going to make the NRC say that all is well. There is a high rise full of NRC bureaucrats in my neck of the woods and I doubt they are going to put the knife in the back of nuclear power. Not so sure about others in this Administration, however.

Grab your wallets, folks. The price of electricity is about to rise again. Because of the government, again.

Why anyone should be surprised by this is beyond me - he explicitly campaigned on having the cost of energy "skyrocket."

I would expect the nuclear energy companies would already be in the midst of reviewing and taking necessary preventative action.

Back in the good ol days we didn't wait to be told by some corporate guy who knew nothing about the operation to tell us what we knew already.

Did it occur to our government of Ivy League geniuses that the people who designed and built these reactors anticipated making them secure in the event of natural disasters???

“Entirely appropriate course of action.”

####

Because the Communist Administration and its army of bureaucrats CERTAINLY knows more about nuke safety than the utility companies and their engineers who are running these facilities.

Obummer is on the record of supporting nuclear energy expansion while nixing drilling for oil. He made his bed and now he is turning over the mattress so to speak. This guy is such a loser!

That is true. I never understood why people complain about him playing golf and going on vacation. It is WAY cheeper for him to do these things than run the government the way he does. I would rather he take a vacation 365 a year and we would actually save a ton of money.

Appropriate IF his goal is to assure the plants are safe,

but I’d bet anything the goal is to find an excuse to shut them down.

“....to ensure they can withstand earthquakes”

He does understand that the damage was not caused by the earthquake, right? It was the wave that knocked out the power, destroyed generators, etc.

We already know exactly what magnitude earthquake each plant is designed for, and we already have predictions for how large an earthquake we can expect in each region. The ‘study’ would take around 15 minutes....unless this is all just a cynical attempt to halt nuke power in this country :)

If Zero runs true to form, he'll have Salazar or some other flunky order all nuke plants shut down pending the review. Then he'll drag his feet.

Just as with the deep-water oil rigs in the Gulf.

Always at the forefront a tentative position taken only after he has been assured of the outcome. If he throws nuclear under the bus, he looses GE, Duke Energy and Exelon money, but will it please George Soros?
It’s kind of like watching his probe the gun rights issue. Wait a month. Try a balloon on the hill. Pitch out a trap for the NRA and now try a closed door meeting with his henchmen to see if they can regulate around the Constitution. There is an enemy agent in the white house.

Yes, unless he also recommends powering them down during the review!

Well, this is a natural reaction to Japan but why do I get the feeling Obama will use this crisis as a way to shut down existing reactors and absolutely close the door on any new construction?

Anybody want to take odds?

Call me a cynic, but I agree with you. It is all part of the Left's plan to destroy the economy of this country.

NOTE! We cannot sustain summer air conditioning loads without the base generating capacity of our nuclear plants. There just aren't enough megawatts without them. A shutdown of all nuclear reactors in the US would mean rolling blackouts and no air conditioning for a lot of folks. We're talking French-level malfeasance.

Bingo! I might agree to a review in 6 months or so after what happened in Japan is thoughtly understood. Until then this is just grandstanding and a waste of money.
