Chapel Hill, N.C. The man behind a proposed mosque near Ground Zero in New York spoke at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Wednesday night.
Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf delivered the 2011 Weil Lecture on American Citizenship. During the lecture, he talked about the importance of Americans engaging with the Muslim community. He said the mosque is one way to help do that.
"I'm committed to bridging relations between the country that I love and the religion that I love," Abdul Rauf said in front of a packed auditorium.
Abdul Rauf, a naturalized U.S. citizen, was born in Kuwaiti. He founded and chairs the Cordoba Movement, which seeks to improve understanding among people of all cultures and faiths.
He has been promoting the Cordoba House, a center to encourage multi-faith understanding at Park51, the proposed cultural center located near the site of the World Trade Center tragedy.
Prior to the lecture, a group opposed to the mosque met nearby. The Christian Action Network played a film about the families of those killed in the Sept. 11, 2011 terrorist attacks.
Some of the people in attendance Wednesday night were in New York City when the attacks occurred.
"I think this mosque at ground zero is a mistake and I'm here to challenge it," said Iario Pantano, who worked near the World Trade Center.
Firefighter Tim Brown was a first responder on Sept. 11. He said he lost 93 friends in the tragedy.
"It's about how hurtful this proposed mosque at ground zero is to the families of 9/11," Brown said.

Abdul the Ah-Rab lecturing on citizenship.
America is so lost.
As if I didn’t have enough reason to dislike UNC (as an NC State fan).
More lies. The Koran authorizes the use of lies and deceit to accomplish conversion/dominance...whatever you want to call it.
Appearance’s are everything.
At one time we could build Rome in a day. Now we’ve become a nation of precious minority worshipers.
The building (WTC) dedicated to everything that made America wonderful “wealth” has become a dirty word and tptb are afraid to rebuild it.
Just sidestep the Mosque issue until the WTC is replaced...and if the Arabs what to talk about good positive feelings just ask them to donate some money to the replacement WTC.
“As if I didnt have enough reason to dislike UNC (as an NC State fan).”
As a die hard UNC fan, and the father of a UNC student, I sadly feel the same way you do. I’m embarrassed that UNC gave Rauf a platform for his hate of America.
“Hey, look at that big cool horse on wheels! Quick, open the gate and pull it inside before some other city takes it!”
I wonder if they will shout and shut him down like Steyn, Coulter, and Horowitz?
The aim of each group is to flood campuses of colleges and universities night after night, week after week and year after year with propaganda beamed directly into young skulls full of mush.
The perverted speakers and lecturers don't bother with the older folks whose minds and philosophies are already made up on most of the issues of our times. In tried-and-true Marxist fashion they zone in on minds still in the formative stages.
There's also a national money mill churning out fat speaking fees and expenses from cash extorted by academia from students' fees. This keeps the propagandizing enemies of the Republic in business......and in many cases, in luxury.
This is a national disgrace and an ongoing danger to the future of our country.....but it's been going on for decades due to the ideological corruption of academia.
A start would be for all alumni to cease donating to their alma maters who blatantly support fifth-column alien idealogues that tirelessly deliver speeches in this nation's higher-learning institutions.

American need to engage their foot in the Muslims posterior as we escort them back to their Islamic crapholes.
"I'm committed to changing the country I despise, and installing the religion that I love," Abdul Rauf said in front of a bunch of dumb ass students."
There, fixed it.
They hate the West.
Why are they here ?
The academic liberal bastion in NC... =.=
Amen, bro, amen...NCSU here also.
We are going to engage with the muslims. you can count on it.
They just are not going to like how we engage...
The Muslim Religion is based on Muhammad and the Sharia Political System. There are two Korons - Koron of Mecca and the Koron of Medina (The violent one).
The Sharia System is one of duality - one interpretation for the Kafirs(non-believer)and one for the Muslims.
Sharia says there is only one true God - Allah. All other Gods are false.

Needs a shot of truth—”He founded and chairs the Cordoba Movement, which seeks to improve understanding among people of all cultures and faiths TO IMPOSE SHARIAH LAW.”
As they say in The City (when you press them): “It’s not a mosque, it’s a trophy.”
