Setting the Palin Record Straight

It’s truly astonishing the lengths that some will go to in order to try to discredit Sarah Palin. Sure, the left-wing media loons are a given, but what about the folks on the Right who relentlessly brand her as unelectable, unintelligent, unpresidential, and/or unqualified? What is their basis for those assessments? And if she is so darn unelectable—why the need to consistently, near-obsessively attempt to tear her down?

What’s most interesting about the repeated attacks on Palin – from the Left and the Right – is that they are routinely empty. They are often featured in online hit pieces that are void of any reference to her record and/or her contributions over the past two years to discussions of national and international significance. They focus on absurd criticism of her TLC series, which so many elitists deemed anti-intellectual and so many regular Americans deemed relatable. They call her a “quitter” because she resigned from the governorship, but don’t reveal the reality that she was faced with numerous frivolous ethics charges made by political operatives that were costing her state hundreds of thousands of dollars and her staff countless hours to refute. The fact that she made the right decision for Alaska, and that the charges were all ultimately dismissed, get buried under the frenzied need some have to try to sabotage her at all costs.

And let’s not forget the manner in which the authors of these hit pieces so often compile every possible negative quotation on Palin they can find, particularly from the mouths of whom they consider to be the conservative intellectual elite. The quotes are typically nonsensical and/or erroneous, and mark embarrassing moments for those who uttered them, as they tend to reflect a complete lack of awareness of Palin’s accomplishments, writings, and outspoken stand on policy initiatives.

Why not? It is not like we do not have plenty of oil, coal and natural gas in the USA.

Bottom Line...Palin is a Winner...Once she is standing at the starting block she will absorb the fear of other runners; turning it into fuel; she will do what winners do...WIN!

Let me be clear again. I like and admire Palin. I wish her and her family well. I have been in and around politics though for too long to be anything other than ruthlessly unsentimental and realistic about Palin’s chances for overcoming her high negative poll numbers.

Did she not also enact an absolute cut in the state budget? I believe she did, and that is very rare for any government executive.

You were probably just as ruthlessly unsentimental and realistic about Reagan when his negatives were high too,right?

Why should anyone take you seriously again?

In my view, Palin's mistakes include:

(1) resigning as Alaska governor, and after resigning, not clearly explaining her reasons for doing so;

(2) establishing herself after that as more a media personality than a serious political figure;

(3) not developing a strong, well-staffed political operation;

(4) failing to make inroads with conservative writers, intellectuals, and opinion makers;

(5) not getting professional training to develop a Thatcherite firmness and authority in her voice and cadences; and,

(6) not giving some serious policy speeches to heavyweight audiences.

As for how Palin has been treated, conservatives in politics are in an arena in which they are going to be treated unfairly on a routine basis. If you can't deal with that without whining, stay out of the arena. When lies have to be responded to and complaints made, they must be done through a press spokesman.

Most of the time, when you are complaining that what your opponents are saying is unfair, you spread it around further and give it credence. You also forfeit the chance to put your message out in an effective manner. And most of all, no one has ever whined and complained their way into being given the Presidency as a pity award.

Properly advised and assisted, I believe that Palin could reverse much of the damage that she has suffered and work down her negative poll numbers. How? Correct the mistakes I have outlined, then deliver a series of major, substantive speeches and articles that lay out specific programs, a positive vision, and a sense of optimism about the country's future.

In doing that, Palin could actually leverage her prominence and high negatives to good effect. Will she do that? Probably not because the hardest thing for anyone to hear is criticism, especially criticism that has any substance to it.

And, once again, let me emphasize: I like and respect Palin and wish her and her family the best.

Kerry could not respond effectively to the Swift Boat ads because the facts were against him. Unlike Palin, Kerry was a fraud.

Great posting, G! You nailed it!

Folks should also remember that a major criticism of GW Bush was that he NEVER responded to those that demeaned him personally and politically. That approach only permitted the media and the Dems to diminish his role as POTUS in the eyes of the general public.

Sarah has backbone and will not let such attacks on her or her family go unanswered. ....She’s got my vote!

Re (3), strong, well-staffed political operation

What I don't want to see is the usual political operators involved. She should be scouring industry, retired military and conservative academia for leaders in every field. A couple of political hack consultants is not going to do it, and it will result in a poorly staffed WH that will get rolled into all sorts of stupid policies (or continuations of stupid policies).

Repeat that crap over and over and over long enough, you might even fool yourself into believing you're actually accomplishing something... but you're not.

The dead giveaway is the less-than-original, and actually rather predictable, "I really admire her, but..."

We've heard it too many times by now for it to be anything but a "spineless lube-job" alert. I have more respect for the putrid egg-farts who at least have the scrote to admit that they hate her.

But you keep repeating that "overcoming her negative poll numbers" mantra, maybe O'Bunghole will send you a nice "Friend of the Liberals" plaque for your man-cave.

Reagan was fiercely and unfairly attacked by his political adversaries and by the news media. Most of it he ignored, and at times he even took private delight in the demonstrations and outlandish criticism and smears.

You suggest that Palin's negatives do not matter much because the country is in such bad shape. In 1980, with the country also in bad shape, Reagan's high negatives had him trailing Carter until just before the end of the campaign.

Of course, if Palin remains a flawed candidate with high negatives, she is unlikely to win the nomination.

Bugs you that a woman from Alaska runs circles around your pathetic excuse for a life, doesn't it? You try running for President, let's see how you stack up against "her negative poll numbers."

You're a bad joke even on yourself! Go away, you're starting to bore the rust on my tractor. I just used my bathroom, and what I flushed is worth more than your mealy-mouthed "opinion" of Palin.

We do have vast untapped energy resources, but even at best, it will takes decades to fully develop them. Our country’s debt crisis will be upon us before they come on line.

"You mean she actually graduate in three are four years like everyone else?? And just went to one school. And I have been miss informed ???and actually has a meaningful degree. Glade you straightened out that mess."

LOL. Did you even GO to college?? If you did, you would know that VERY FEW people "graduate in three or four years", in curricula other than basketweaving.. It took me five years (BS Chemistry), because I switched out of Mechanical Engineering.
