Fukushima nuke plant situation 'worsened considerably': think tank
Kyodo News ^ | March 15, 2011 | Staff

The situation at the quake-hit Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant in northeastern Japan ''has worsened considerably,'' the Institute for Science and International Security said in a statement released Tuesday.

Referring to fresh explosions that occurred earlier in the day at the site and problems in a pool storing spent nuclear fuel rods, the Washington-based think tank said, ''This accident can no longer be viewed as a level 4 on the International Nuclear and Radiological Events scale that ranks events from 1 to 7.''

Noting that a level 4 incident involves ''only local radiological consequences,'' it said the ongoing crisis is ''now closer to a level 6, and it may unfortunately reach a level 7'' -- a worst case scenario with extensive health and environmental consequences.

''The international community should increase assistance to Japan to both contain the emergency at the reactors and to address the wider contamination. We need to find a solution together,'' it said.

Someone started a LIVE thread in breaking news this morning for all the updates from Japan so we could keep track of them in one place. You might want to post your update there too:

The ISIS is a leftist, anti-nuclear organization. Their thoughts on what level crisis this is can be safely ignored.

I’ve seen this bumped above a level 4 in many places. But the same level as Chernobyl? Perhaps the scale needs to be revised. Unless there is a permanent 30km exclusion zone for the rest of our generation, I don’t see how it can be on the same scale as Chernobyl.

My advice for you and your family, do not let your politics get in the way of your integrity. The left is not always wrong. Granted I would rate them at 80-90 % incorrect. That does leave about a 10-20 % chance that they got this one right.

No doubt. But no one can deny that it is currently worse than Three Mile Island (5) and not as bad as Chernobyl (7).

Have you not heard about the H5N1 pandemic yet? 85% mortality (9 of 11 died). Be the first one on your block to wear a hazmat suit.

TMI a 5? More like a 4, by their own metrics. The Japanese reactor is still only a 5 on their scale. It might become a 6. But here is the one '6' according to Wikipedia entry:
Kyshtym disaster at Mayak, Soviet Union, 29 September 1957. A failed cooling system at a military nuclear waste reprocessing facility caused a steam explosion that released 70–80 tons of highly radioactive material into the environment.
IMO the Japanese reactor park disaster will end up releasing one tenth of that or less. I would guess the release so far -- of radioactive material -- is under a ton. Since the NGO claims each level is 10x worse, we are still at a 5.

Hazmat myass. We’ve sealed ourselves in the garage with vinyl and duct tape and painted the walls with iodine. We aren’t gonna get caught with our pants down this time, no siree.

Potentially a 5, we’re still bet. a 4 and a 5 IMO.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said radiation dose rates of up to 400 millisievert (mSv) per hour had been reported at the Fukushima plant site immediately following one of the explosions...

Today the IAEA said, “observations indicate that the level of radioactivity has been decreasing at the site.

I see Soros (Ploughshares), Rockefeller, Bill and Melinda Gates, the U.N., the Institute of Peace, the Sherman Foundation... a who's who of leftist philanthropic orgs.

They are a persistent bunch, you have to give them that.

Joe Cirincione is an anti-nuke nut:

http://www.ploughshares.org/expert/103

He’s the resident “nuclear” expert the media is using.

“Joseph Cirincione joined Ploughshares Fund as president in March 2008. He is author of Bomb Scare: The History and Future of Nuclear Weapons and served previously as senior vice president for national security and international policy at the Center for American Progress and as director for nonproliferation at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace for eight years.”

Why do FReepers fall for this garbage? It’s the media folks!

More from this idiot Joe:

“What we’re seeing is unprecedented in nuclear power history. It’s made worse by way the Japanese build their reactors, they cluster them together. ... Many of the plants in Japan have four or more units, it’s very efficient, so what it means is a disaster at one can avalanche into a complicated disaster next door,” said Cirincione.”

What would he prefer that the plants be distributed evenly throughout the area? That would make it better? The guy’s a leftist moron.

Not many are falling for it. People are getting wise to the game. At least here they are.
