WASHINGTON (AP) -- Barack Obama once said it was a "scandal" that then-President George W. Bush didn't force renewal of a federal assault weapons ban.
Now it's Obama himself who's steering clear of that and other politically sensitive gun-control measures, even while calling for a new discussion on weapons and "how we can keep America safe for all our people."

Can you guarantee that NICS will never be used to deliberately abridge the RKBA of free people who are not even alleged--much less proven--to have committed any crime?
“how we can keep America safe for all our people.”
Vote your A$$ out of office, for starters!
That is a great saying and so true! It deserves to be tattooed on every libturds forehead. No one is more stupid or illogical that RAT bastard liberal socialists...including all dimturds & RINOs.
That, and the lack of porous borders, and importation of treasonous tribal savages.
I can't guarantee that NICS does anything to fight crime any more than the 1968 Gun Control Act or The Brady Bill can guarantee that it does anything at all to the same end.
However, before you think this gives you license to exercise your rights in returning to the business of selling guns through the mail to any anonymous person who sends you cash, you might step back and realize that this isn't what Heller and McDonald ruled. NICS and 1968 GCA weren't struck down by those rulings. The Supreme Court made motions in both majority rulings that such things can come into being through the legislature without tramping our RKBA.
So, we have a national instant-check system whether we like it or not. Firearms transactions were tightened up in this regard at retail sale decades ago. I demand that liberals play along with this monster they've created and register all their unstable loons to prevent them from getting guns under NICS --- and I have no concern for whether this stigmatizes them or not.
Keeper quote, to be thrown back into the teeth of the Left when they start sloganizing and campaigning.
Memorize for use at discretion.
That is precisely what he is thinking.
Precision bump.
That was Carrie_Okie's original point. That's exactly what Obama meant. He meant it the same way when he talked during the campaign last fall about his transfer-payment and TARP schemes, about "gettin' people some help!!"
When he starts talking Ebonics, he's talkin' 'bout tha com-MUNE-a-tee, which is code talk for "everybody except Whitey."
They've been talking that code for years right in front of us as if we were stupid -- 12, 15, 25 years now. Talkin' 'bout Mr. Ofay, Mr. Gray, and he can't do nuthin' about it!!!
This is BS...he is about to pull some serious gun legislation...watch it come via regulations...
Not with this Congress.
My thoughts exactly.
They'll trot out Congresswoman Giffords and use this to demonize anyone on the right who opposes them.
This regime has been going after guns from the start. They've sent out feelers about using UN treaties, executive orders, EPA regulation of lead in ammo, BATFE regulation of long gun sales, and whatever else they can think of. IMO, the only things that have slowed them down have been the HUGE gun and ammo sales surge after they took office, and the BATFE getting caught on Operation Gunwalker. Make no mistake, though. These bastards and their leader are WAY too determined and arrogant to let anything stop them. With the sheer arrogance with which they rammed through Obamacare, I don't understand how anyone thinks they won't have the audacity to try the same with gun control.
Thank you for calling BS on this story.
Something Obama and Chavez might be cooking up in background.
All of a sudden there’s a lot of “gun” news coming out of DC.
I wonder, “what’s up?”
Is Obama finally going to make his move?
Or he wants to get everybody stirred up over this while he does something else he doesn't want us to pay attention to...
??? This congress??? really?
How come cap & trade is happening through the EPA?
How are all the other “laws” happening that this congress would stop?
Because Obama doesn’t need congress, he has made them irrelevant - he is legislating through regulation.
Congress can’t do anything about it.
That wasn't the question I asked. Let me repeat: Can you guarantee that NICS will never be used to deliberately abridge the RKBA of free people who are not even alleged--much less proven--to have committed any crime?
To what extent should citizens be expected to cooperate if the government decides to illegitimately abridge someone's RKBA?
Certainly not, because I'm sure that it does now. I've heard more than one first-hand story of a mistaken NICS denial based upon the law-abiding buyer having a common first name shared with a prohibited person in the same ZIP code.
(I'm sorry, I missed answering this question.)
I think we're still beholden to following an unconstitutional law until it's struck down by the courts or repealed by the legislature.
With McDonald and Heller, we now have a standard on what level of scrutiny measures RKBA cases, with the US Supreme Court holding that a 'Rational Basis' is insufficient.
If you're hoping for something to happen to NICS, I think that the best thing would be for SCOTUS to strike it down if you can satisfactorily prove that it is abridging RKBA by accident (as in the case of the one I mentioned) or deliberately, like how you fear that it could be nefariously used.
That doesn't necessarily mean NICS would disappear, but there could be a ruling that forces the Federal government to adhere to former Atty General Ashcroft's measure to prove the regularly scheduled elimination of archived NICS requests once and for all.
Tell me the attorney for a reputable aggrieved recipient to whom I can send a donation for this cause. I hope it's Alan Gura warming up in the bullpen again.
It is being nefariously used for that already.
