I have not yet gone downthread, but: The current estimate of rebuiling Japan is $180 billion.

When we compare this devastation, and compare it with the recent "stimulous bill" of about $800 billion, we can get a better understanding of how much the US Congress has wasted our money, on totally un-needed spending.

You can donate to them through Catholic relief Services.

Donations can be made online at http://crs.org/japan/

The United Methodist Church is already put forth a call for contributions for Japan. All of the money or supplies will go directly to the people. I feel sure that other denominations are doing the same. No administrative costs involved as those who manage it are already paid by the church.

What a great organization, and it’s already in place ready to mobilize with love, hope and healing for the nation of Japan. CRASH stands for Christian Relief, Assistance, Support and Hope.

Here are two separate donation portals to donate through CRASH

Salvation Army is also on the ground there.

Very sad indeed. What’s more sad is the fact that many victims probably haven’t even been found yet... at least this girl is now in contact with people (at least the photographer who shot this photo).

I pray for good weather, quickly diminishing aftershocks and all the help the people can get during the ongoing rescue efforts. I also pray that the world community spares no effort in helping these poor folks out.

Kind of interesting that after a major disaster in a foreign country where they don't even use a Latin-based alphabet . . . someone knows how to write "HELP" and "SOS" in big white letters on the ground.

Maybe I'm being cynical here, but after all that nonsense about fabricated signs and photo images in Europe during the "Mohammed cartoon" controversy a few years ago, I wonder if something like that image has been staged by the media.

I have my own issues with the organization, but for simply guaranteeing that the largest portion of your donation goes to relief, Catholic Charities usually seems to come out on top.

Your inference that the Japanese people somehow deserve this ... is disgusting.

Hey, it works for Westboro, why not for GeronL?

I almost posted the same thought this morning. Thanks, nully.

English literacy is pretty high there. I lived there for eight years and didn’t really need to read much Kanji. They actually do use a Latinate script called Romaji (thank heaven, or I’d have been lost in a hundred rural train stations!)

I felt like crying when a tree fell on my house a few years ago

A tornado came thru my neighborhood last August and blew down my front yard oak tree onto my house. Did lots of damage but all of it was repaired.

It was nothing compared to what just occured in Japan and in previous disasters around the world.

The only thing that I kept in mind was that "anything that is broken can be fixed. Anything that is destroyed can be rebuilt". I have no doubt that that will happen in Japan and will gain strength from the fact that they will have help from the United States and our christian communities in that rescue and rebuilding effort........

SOS and HELP are pretty much universally recognized across all languages. Logic would say that in an event like that, you would want to write something that is recognized by aid workers from around the world.
