Concerns about Japan’s earthquake-induced nuclear-power shutdowns spread to another reactor at the Tokai No. 2 Power station, but authorities said a pump is keeping the reactor cool, according to reports early Monday.

One of the two pumps used to cool the water of a suppression pool for the nuclear reactor at the Tokai plant stopped, but a second system is working, according to the English-language version of Kyodo News, which cited the nuclear safety section of the prefectural government.

Japan Atomic Power said the reactor core at Tokai No. 2 Power station has been cooled, “without any problem,” Kyodo News reported.

Japanese scientists increased their estimate of the largest earthquake in the nation’s history to magnitude 9.0 from 8.8, more than doubling the size and the destructive energy release in the Friday afternoon, local time, quake off the coast of Honshu.

Data on the U.S. Geological Survey’s website also indicated an increase to 9.0 from the previous U.S. estimate of 8.9

The damage to nuclear by Big Press is going to overshadow the damage done by the quake.

How disappointing this news must be to the anti-nukes.

Good. So, despite what was pretty much the worst-case scenario for natural disasters, nuclear energy is proving to be relatively safe or at least manageable in the face of said disasters.

If a 35 year-old design can withstand this...

Safer than any other power plant.

Could have been worse, could have been a Natural Gas plant:

I imagine a quake (and tsunami) like this would have caused damage to pretty much anything... coal mines, oil refineries, solar panel factories, whatever.

9.0 quake is approximately equal to 474 megatons of TNT. A lot of energy released would be a vast understatement.

Technically the Tokai plant would have been the Third plant that has experienced reactor cooling problems. And the total number of reactors affected with cooling problems during this catastrophe now stands at 7.

Fukushima Daiichi (3)
Fukushima Daini (3)
Tokai Daini (1)

Wonder if they also vented steam from the Tokai reactor ?
