The monarchy is not elected; the United Kingdom has a herditary monarchy with strict rules about who is to succede to the throne when a monarch dies or abdicates.

When you compare it to hiring the village idiot from somewhere in Kenya, hereditary monarchy starts looking pretty good. At least the Queen doesn't need a teleprompter to give a speech. And she actually knows how to act when she's visiting the White House.
