To be honest I don’t know. They remain radioactive a long time as the half life of the fuel rods is pretty long. Remember they domed over the Chernobyl plant that went critical and nobody’s going to be going in there for a few thousand years.

even if they weren’t as prepared as CA, they are more civil and orderly and would not beat the crap out of people for a bottle of water.
Our country has resources and trained emergency people and many people are prepared, but we are not orderly or civil in emergencies which raises the need to be able to defend yourself as well. especially if you are prepared as people will bleieve they have a right to take your stuff.

Anyone living now over the age of fifty has been exposed to dozens of actual Atomic and Hydrogen bomb atmospheric detonations, including two rather famous ones in Japan. A leaking reactor is not a good thing, but unless you’re living within a close radius it’s not going to kill you before something else does. That the Japanese, the only people to ever suffer a nuclear attack, also have the longest life expectancy on earth should also be reassuring.

I’m sure they hate venting that steam but is a necessary step to get the pressure down in the reactor vessel while they get water in there to cover all the rods and cool things down
The GOJ briefing on using sea water said they planned to contain the sea water used for cooling, not release it into the ocean. These men working around all these disaster scenarios are smart and dedicated, and heros imho..
I am wondering if the workers and others being treated for exposure were caught by steam in the explosion or a plume aftermath, and if most of their injury is burns from the steam
Reminds me that great heros we have forgotten went into the Chernobyl reactor knowing they were killing themselves to save others

As far as I know, Vermont Yankee plant did not have a meltdown. If it did, you had better call Jane Fonda, Michael Moore and Al Gore.

Has everyone noticed...through all this horror we haven’t seen the behaviors demonstrated in New Orleans during Katrina? I know it’s early but I’d be shocked to read of mass looting and stupid human tricks on display during and after Katrina.
I will be donating to the relief effort. I have no doubts that the Japanese will use every dime towards rebuilding and recovery, and nothing will be wasted.

From what I have read, certain reactor designs are a lot safer and more reliable than others. Some of the newer ones are virtually impossible to have a meltdown with because of how the fuel is shaped and how the control mechanisms work. Generally speaking the newer designs from the 1980s onward are a lot better than older reactor designs. Our problem here is that most of our reactors are older designs because eco-nuts have not let the safer, better designs be built.
Yup, it is certainly better to vent off steam with a little radiation in it than have the core melt and release a whole hell of a lot. Definitely. Basically you’re talking about a 3-mile island scenario versus a Chernobyl scenario, who wouldn’t rather have the former versus the latter?
Anyone working in a nuke plant emergency like this is a hero. You got that right. Then throw on top of that working with earthquakes still going on and the risk of another tsunami coming in on top of you.
