It's a move required by the U.S. Department of Justice after it says not enough African-Americans passed the exam.
Dayton is in desperate need of officers to replace dozens of retirees. The hiring process was postponed for months because the D.O.J. rejected the original scores provided by the Dayton Civil Service Board, which administers the test.
Under the previous requirements, candidates had to get a 66% on part one of the exam and a 72% on part two.
The D.O.J. approved new scoring policy only requires potential police officers to get a 58% and a 63%. That's the equivalent of an F and a D.
It becomes a safety issue for the people of our community, said Dayton Fraternal Order of Police President, Randy Beane. It becomes a safety issue to have an incompetent officer next to you in a life and death situation."
The NAACP does not support individuals failing a test and then having the opportunity to be gainfully employed, agreed Dayton NAACP President Derrick Foward.
The D.O.J. and Civil Service Board declined Daytons News Sources repeat requests for interviews. The lower standards mean 258 more people passed the test. The city won't say how many were minorities.
If you lower the score for any group of people, you're not getting the best qualified people for the job, Foward said.
We need to work with the youth and make them interested in becoming law enforcement officers and firefighters, said Beane. Break down the barriers whether they are real or perceived, so we can move forward in this community.
The D.O.J. has forced other police departments across the country to lower testing standards, citing once again that not enough black candidates were passing.

It will be interesting when they get around to doing this for airline pilots! 30 plus years ago I an encounter with an EEOC officer who had flown into town for a meeting with my county agency on our testing procedures for paramedics. He was insistent that lots of people can do the work but “just don’t do well on tests.” I asked him if he would get back on the plane and return to Washington if he knew the pilots didn’t do well with exams and had failed their written tests for several ratings? He didn’t see the humor, but I think he might have gotten the point.

I do not mind hiring anyone who passes an objective test, not subjective and hiring them in thot requiring merit assures that the public will not get adequate and proper treatment.
Congress this week did the same for the military. Racism is rampant against native born, English speaking Caucasian, American Males. As Europe has now said, Multi Culturalism does not work.
The company I fly for just hired two people, both are former US Army Pilots, one a black male the other a white female, both are incredibly intelligent and exceptional pilots.
The black male is a graduate of West Point and he is the most anti-political person I’ve ever met.
Refuses to get sucked int any debate on politics, isn’t registered to vote.
I’ve had the pleasure of meeting, working with and flying with many military pilots and he without a doubt one of the smartest one’s to date.
Tell the “justice joke” dept to shove it up Holder’s smelly Obama.

I’ll bet would be one of the last people who want test scores lowered to accommodate blacks. Adjusting test results to allow those who otherwise would not qualify for a position is bad for everyone involved, but it’s so typical of how liberals think. They honestly don’t understand why some things work and others don’t. They skip right over the process and jump to the assumption that anyone who gets into a position can do just as well as anyone else. Even if you manage to somehow circumvent the kind of testing that is valid and is indeed predictive how well someone knows a subject and get these “affirmative action” candidates into a job they often learn very quickly just getting the position is only half the job!

In the years of 68-69 race riots raged in Dayton; white flight took hold and by the early 70's the factory's were shutting down; NCR with 10,000 per shift, Frigerdare, GM, and so many others, all left when they saw the destruction of the city by those who dwell until today on the West Side.
Any city that elects a foul mouth uneducated politician to run the city deserves this.
ABC couldn't print the truth if their lives depended on it.
