Japan earthquake factbox: Entire Japan coast shifted 2.4 metres, earth axis moves ten inches

A massive tsunami sweeps in to engulf a residential area after a powerful earthquake in Natori, Miyagi Prefecture in northeastern Japan March 11, 2011. The biggest earthquake to hit Japan in 140 years struck the northeast coast on Friday, triggering a 10-metre tsunami that swept away everything in its path, including houses, cars and farm buildings on fire.

Cars and destroyed homes swept by a tsunami are seen on a street after an earthquake in Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture March 12, 2011. Japan confronted devastation along its northeastern coast on Saturday, with fires raging and parts of some cities under water after a massive earthquake and tsunami that likely killed at least 1,000 people.

The letters "SOS" are seen written on the ground at Minami Sanriku Elementary School, after an earthquake in Minami Sanriku Town, Miyagi Prefecture March 12, 2011. Japan confronted devastation along its northeastern coast on Saturday, with fires raging and parts of some cities under water after a massive earthquake and tsunami that likely killed at least 1,000 people.

USGS Dr. Dave Applegate says the Japan earthquake ruptured a 180 mile long by 50 mile wide section of the Earth's crust.

Scientists from the United States Geological Service answered questions from the public this afternoon, with some startling revelations made.

* The first tsunami wave in Samoa was reportedly one foot tall, but the seventh wave was much larger, indicating coastal areas shoudl remain on tsunami advisory well after the first wave hits, even if that wave appears small.

* 100+ aftershocks have rated 5.0 magnitude or more in Japan since the initial shake.

* Earth's axis has reportedly shifted ten inches as a result of the quake, and Japan's coast is said to have permanently shifted 2.4 metres.

* The quake was 900 times stronger than the quake that hammered San Francisco in 1989.

* Aftershocks from the Peru earthquake of almost a year ago are still felt to this day.

* Honshu earthquake occurred on ocean floor of the Pacific plate, bumping 250 miles of coastline.

* Shaking was felt as far away as China.

* The Honshu quake was not as large as the 1964 Alaska earthquake, but was comparable to the recent Chile earthquake.

* Tsunami waves that hit California earlier today washed three onlookers out to sea. Two have been recovered.

* St Louis, Missouri media outlets report that city has moved an inch as a result of the quake.

* Waves from the ensuing tsunami reached 32 feet high.

Thanks, HiTech. I could understand a change in the angle, perhaps, but stating a shift in inches implies parallel shift. This does not make sense to me. Does it to you?

“The March 19 SuperMoon is by far the most significant storm and seismic indicator this month, but it’s not the only one. Lesser geocosmic shock windows also up the ante for unusually strong storms and moderate to severe seismic activity (including magnitude 5+ earthquakes, subsequent tsunami, and volcanic eruptions). These lesser windows include March 1-7 (surrounding the new moon on the 4th), March 23-26 (bracketing the lunar south declination peak on the 25th), and from late on the 31st on into early April.”

No, only evil wealthy conservatives have an impact on global temperatures.

I won’t ridicule you for writing about a physical pole shift, even though I think that’s unlikely.

I see an abrupt magnetic pole shift, with an accompanying physical shake-up, as much more likely.

The magnetic pole has been in motion ever since reliable compasses were developed, and I think the motion has increased in recent decades. Possibly the shift is not all that abrupt?

Do anyone know how much of a warning they had before the tsunami hit? I’m reading a few different threads but haven’t seen that piece of info yet.

I dont really understand all the terminology of astrologers.
I just know he is the guy who coined Supermoon and he was warning of disasters.
This is his site.

I have been looking through it to see what he says about the stock market as there is a belief about full moons and the market.

So pretty much random predictions blanketing a significant portion of the month, and he still misses Japan. Which I’m sure he would have claimed credit for if it did fall within one of his multiple day ranges.

Shifted relative to what? Did it shift back?”

Which axis? Magnetic axis? Rotational axis? Did the core shift relative to the crust?

If the rotational axis shifted suddenly, given the amount of momentum involved, the energy released by such a shift would probably mean the entire planetary crust ruptures, given that the crust itself is a paper-thin layer floating on the rest of the earth’s bulk.

I find this whole claim ambiguous and dubious; look at the source of this claim: Italy.

I am not going to discount it because it happened to fall between the two windows.

You can’t be exact when it comes to Mother Nature.

Just curious, did the seismologists predict there would be a major event in March before the rumblings showed up on their machines?

I would say Nolle gave a better warning than the seismologists.

I’m guessing this is their latitude’s piece of the axis shift. No way St. Louis got jarred over by even an inch. It would be felt and how.

I'm thinking the entire North American plate moved. So, everyone else on that plate wouldn't notice the relative movement. But seismographs in the US picked up the quakes in Japan, so it was "felt" in a way.

I read some stories indicating that even the rate of spin was increased by the Chilean earthquake.

We lost one microsecond per day - apparently.

The Japanese aren’t Haitians. They won’t wait for aid to start helping themselves. They will rebuild.

Off topic but what’s with all them white vehicles? Are they ‘generic’ vehicles they sell to their population and save the rest for export?

Just wondering.
