Quake moved Japan coast 8 feet; shifted Earth's axis

The powerful earthquake that unleashed a devastating tsunami Friday appears to have moved the main island of Japan by 8 feet (2.4 meters) and shifted the Earth on its axis.

"At this point, we know that one GPS station moved (8 feet), and we have seen a map from GSI (Geospatial Information Authority) in Japan showing the pattern of shift over a large area is consistent with about that much shift of the land mass," said Kenneth Hudnut, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Reports from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy estimated the 8.9-magnitude quake shifted the planet on its axis by nearly 4 inches (10 centimeters).

I for one want to know exactly where the North Pole is, and where themagnetic pole is, and how far off they are.

The North Magnetic Pole moves slowly over time due to magnetic changes in the Earth's core.

In 2001, it was determined by the Geological Survey of Canada to lie near Ellesmere Island in northern Canada at 81°18′N 110°48′W / 81.3°N 110.8°W / 81.3; -110.8 (Magnetic North Pole 2001).

It was estimated to be at 82°42′N 114°24′W / 82.7°N 114.4°W / 82.7; -114.4 (Magnetic North Pole 2005 est) in 2005.

In 2009, it was moving toward Russia at between 34 and 37 mi (55-60 km) per year.

Magnetic North is making a beeline for Siberia. If the outer crust slides on top of the hot buttery mantle in like manner then the West Coast might assume a more northerly latitude while the East Coast shifts South (and slightly west west relative to north)

Where it ends, who knows. Siberia and China could become the new North Pole and Antarctica could become the new Australia. But we’ll have to hurry, stake out the territory and keep the muslims out.

it might have been 17!

Ya think that “news cycles” is something that isn’t any more divinely malleable than the rest of human undertakings?

I differ (and won’t bother begging to do so).

Oh geeze, that whole Niberu (sp?) BS that all of those nut cases keep thinking they are photographing but no one ever sees.

Over on the ATS website, they routinely predict doom every other month, only to just predict a new one when the old one doesn’t pan out.

The variance varies depending on location. Each USGS topographic map gives the variance for the center of that map.

My Sunday School class has been sending Bibles to undergrund believers in China for the last couple of years. If you would like to become a Bible smuggler, go to Bibles Unbound. Or, if you'd rather make a one time donation, go to Voice of the Martyrs and designate your donation for the "Bibles to Captive Nations" program.

Farrakhan had a savior day and named Obama the savior.

Enough said.

For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now (Ro. 8:22).

I think the earth has had enought "Braxton Hicks" contractions and we are getting close to the real thing now.

There were thousands built on sand that stood for decade after decade with almost no change but those built on the red clay sometimes settled and shifted, the sand seemed to be the more stable of the two.

Having grown up in Southern California (in a town where EVERYTHING was built on sand), I can tell you that sand is perfect - until you have an earthquake. Then what we call liquefaction occurs: so much kinetic energy is present in the sand that it no longer acts as a solid, but as a liquid. Of course, the flood problem mentioned in the parable is true, too, the two times a year it rains. "...and great was the fall of it."

I'm no scientist, but can't Michael Moore's considerable girth be used as a counterbalance?

There must be something he'd be useful for.

Very interesting article and I just wonder...aside from the religious aspects....what this shifting means in the grand
scheme of things weather-wise and other wise.

Being a desert-dweller I wouldn’t mind if it meant more rain
and a little less heat in summer for us. :)...and while I’m
at it, I would like a pony.
