Cap'n Crunch sails into obscurity (Nanny-Statism has killed my favorite cereal!)

The Soggies have finally won: Cap'n Crunch is quietly sailing into retirement.

Long derided by health experts for its high sugar content – a single serving contains 12 grams – the cereal is no longer being actively marketed by Quaker, DailyFinance reports. It appears parent company Pepsico is forcing the good Cap'n to walk the plank.

Cap'n Crunch was once the No. 1 breakfast cereal, but pressure from the White House and health activists is having an effect on how PepsiCo and other food companies peddle their products to kids. Sales of the cereal were down 6.8 percent in 2010.

I am an inveterate cereal eater.

I eat nothing but cereal for breakfast, ever. I go out for ceremonial bacon and eggs, french toast styles of breakfasts on vacation and with my wife or friends, but during my working week and leisurely weekends, it is a bowl of cereal.

I was notorious for years due to my “Jethro Bowl”. Now, I limit myself to two cups of cereal with two cups of milk. My wife makes me use skim, which makes me cry tears of shame and regret as I bathe my Cocoa Puffs in them.

They deserve better.

But...I love my wife, and so I do as she demands.

I avoid the healthy ones like the plague, and only eat them if I am completely out.

I have a box of stale Cornflakes that have had to watch a parade of Lucky Charms, Cocoa Krispies, Cocoa Puffs, Honeycombs, Sugar Smacks, Sugar Pops and Frosted Mini-Wheats come and go.

I feel kind of sorry for it, but what are you going to do?

The only cereals I like that are even remotely healthy are Rice Chex and Corn Chex. And even on those, I must have maple syrup or the like.

Cap’n Crunch is gross. Just tasted nasty. Didn’t even like it as a kid.

But I hate to see anything get yanked due to Michelle Obama’s opinion.

Sorry to hear it. I can’t remember the last bowel of cereal I ate, but If I could eat any cereal I wanted, it would be a big, giant bowel of Cap’n Crunch in ice cold milk.

Say it isn’t so. There’s nothing in all the cuisine of the world that is anywhere similar to the Peanut Butter Cap’n Crunch.

How sad. I loved Cap'n Crunch and would buy it today except the box it comes in is too kiddy looking.

And before you laugh that comment off, how many of you buy tampons for your lady?

There are some things an old man just won't do!

Now, those were cereals. I preferred Quisp and my brother, Quake.

I liked Cap’n Crunch as a kid, although my Mom wouldn’t buy it for me (Honeycombs were as far into the sugary cereal realm as she would go). I do recall their amazing roof of the mouth shredding abilities, though (Cap’n Crunch, not Honeycombs). Man, those things stayed nice and crunchy in milk.

I just bought a box a week ago. Better go get some more.

I’ve been eating this cereal for 40 years.

Remember Quake? It was Capt. Crunch on steroids and would, literally, tear the roof of your mouth if you weren’t careful.

It was paired with some whispy cereal called Quisp. Kinda like saucer shaped corn puffs.

Ever so often the Cap’n would come out with a box called Oops All Crunchberries. The kiddies loved it.

There are some similar store brands but not many.

I still like Honeycombs as a snack food, the things are too big to eat with a spoon, but grabbing a handful they’re tasty.

People have been bitching and moaning about sugary cereals marketing to kids since I was a kid. Sales are down, they’re looking for a new hook.

Mine was in my pocket when my mother threw it in the laundry. It went through the dryer. I was a very sad little kid.
