Cap'n Crunch sails into obscurity (Nanny-Statism has killed my favorite cereal!)

The Soggies have finally won: Cap'n Crunch is quietly sailing into retirement.

Long derided by health experts for its high sugar content – a single serving contains 12 grams – the cereal is no longer being actively marketed by Quaker, DailyFinance reports. It appears parent company Pepsico is forcing the good Cap'n to walk the plank.

Cap'n Crunch was once the No. 1 breakfast cereal, but pressure from the White House and health activists is having an effect on how PepsiCo and other food companies peddle their products to kids. Sales of the cereal were down 6.8 percent in 2010.

Sad. Bordering on Pathetic. I lived for this cereal and Saturday morning cartoons back in the 60's.

Wherever shall we get the whistles to take over the phone system?

Is it nanny statism or the fact that it’s a horrible tasting cereal and that crunchberries shred the inside of your mouth. I always thought Cap’n Crunch was a punishment food, “here kid eat this crappy cereal that will make your mouth bleed”.

Raise your hand if you were one of those who would handpick all of the crunchberries out of the box, and leave the poor sap afterwards with just the regular Captain Crunch.

Damn. I would still be eating this cereal regularly if they would tone down the sugar content just a little. I especially like the way it stays crunchy in milk and have never found a breakfast cereal to equal it in this regard.

Breakfast cereals have gotten so blah lately that most of them taste like oatmeal. So I've just gone back to eating oatmeal. Yeah, I know it is better for my health.

But sitting home in my jammies would also be better for my health than going to work if only Obozo would pay my bills.

I have one box of Captain Crunch at home. I admit to being partial to Sugar Smacks, Sugar Pops, Cocoa Puffs and Cocoa Crispies, but I will take the time to eat the last box and remember what was once upon a time.
