A Decatur man accused of punching a 14-year-old girl in the face for running into his son on the slopes in Colorado has pleaded guilty to third-degree assault.
The Vail Daily reported Tuesday that the plea from 41-year-old Scott Filler, a renowned malaria expert, was for a misdemeanor stemming from the December incident at Beaver Creek Ski Resort.
Police reports say Filler thought the teen was skiing carelessly when she bumped into his 4-year-old son. Eagle County sheriff's deputies say that's when he jumped on the girl and hit her with his fist. The girl said she was swerving to avoid another skier.
District Attorney Mark Hurlbert says Filler was sentenced to anger management classes and restitution, the amount of which would be determined by the girl.
Prosecutors also sought community service, but Hurlbert says the judge fined Filler $500 instead.
Three witnesses told deputies they observed Filler punch girl between two and four times.
The ski instructor who pulled the Decatur man off the girl told deputies Filler punched her "at least four times, using a closed fist," sheriff's Lt. Mike McWilliam told the AJC. Two other witnesses said they observed Filler yell at the girl before landing two or three punches, the sheriff's office spokesman said.
Filler, charged with misdemeanor child abuse, told deputies he thought the girl was skiing carelessly and had seriously injured his son. The boy was not hurt, however, and Filler apologized. The girl was treated for minor injuries at a local medical center.
Her father requested charges be filed against Filler, who was banned for life from Vail's six ski resorts.

Any Mexican illegals in Vail would likely be found in food or custodial service or hospitality, not taking ski classes. Vail is expensive, and illegals are poor! LOL!
On the other hand, Vail is a favorite vacation spot for well-heeled Mexican tourists. According to the local rag, Latin American visitors account for ten or twelve percent of Vail's ski trade, and Mexicans make up the majority of the category.
Then she says she doesn’t want him arrested.
And why wouldn’t she want him arrested? Because she would have to testify in court, which would require her being identified for the court as an illegal immigrant, possibly causing her whole family grief.

Where are you getting this information? It didn't state anything like that in the article that was posted; do you have personal knowledge of what this girl was doing?
And why do you think 14 isn't a little girl? Is it her size? Her maturity level? Her level of naivety? How big her bust is? What makes her not a little girl?
They might have found a conservative criminal here ... if so the left will do whatever they can to trash the man...

I wonder if they know something that you don’t.
Your worldview must be very dark that you lump all teens into a negative group until they prove to YOU that they are human. Two of my teens were overseas defending your right to believe that and two more will put on that uniform shortly; are they punks as well?

You know, someone doesn’t even have to bodily collide with another skier to know them down. All they have to do is clip the end of their skis and someone can go flying.

So she hit a 4 yr old to avoid another skier? Reads as though she was skiing out of control in a public area with small children present. I favor action should be taken against the teen, but probably not a fist’o-cuffs by the father, although there are some social benefits ot immediate response to the threat upon his child’s safety by an out of control skier. I suspect he has grounds against the ski slope for not enforcing the rules of out of control skiers on the bunny slopes.

You know, I hardly have met a 14 year old girl who just doesn’t love kids. I’ll bet she felt pretty bad about colliding with the boy and both of them taking a spill.
I would have expected her first reaction to be to get up and see if he was alright, and then apologize.
But then again, most of the teen aged girls I know AREN’T punks, but even the ones which come across that way towards adults, are still protective about children.
I didn’t see any evidence the girl was in a ski school lesson. There are a lot of teens who learn how to ski, become overly confident, run through the bunny slopes adjacent to young beginning skier classes, focused on getting to the chair lift before avoiding possible collisions.
I would think the ski resort would very much have kicked her off the slopes for both out of control skiing and possibly assault.
I forget, but a skiing collision in some Colorado resorts used to lead to criminal charges. It really doesn’t take much to kill, maim, or cause permanent injury due to careless skiing on slopes congested with beginners and kids.
A punch in the face is far less threatening than a full impact with a skier traveling even at moderate downhill speeds or a loose ski flying through the air.
