A Decatur man accused of punching a 14-year-old girl in the face for running into his son on the slopes in Colorado has pleaded guilty to third-degree assault.
The Vail Daily reported Tuesday that the plea from 41-year-old Scott Filler, a renowned malaria expert, was for a misdemeanor stemming from the December incident at Beaver Creek Ski Resort.
Police reports say Filler thought the teen was skiing carelessly when she bumped into his 4-year-old son. Eagle County sheriff's deputies say that's when he jumped on the girl and hit her with his fist. The girl said she was swerving to avoid another skier.
District Attorney Mark Hurlbert says Filler was sentenced to anger management classes and restitution, the amount of which would be determined by the girl.
Prosecutors also sought community service, but Hurlbert says the judge fined Filler $500 instead.
Three witnesses told deputies they observed Filler punch girl between two and four times.
The ski instructor who pulled the Decatur man off the girl told deputies Filler punched her "at least four times, using a closed fist," sheriff's Lt. Mike McWilliam told the AJC. Two other witnesses said they observed Filler yell at the girl before landing two or three punches, the sheriff's office spokesman said.
Filler, charged with misdemeanor child abuse, told deputies he thought the girl was skiing carelessly and had seriously injured his son. The boy was not hurt, however, and Filler apologized. The girl was treated for minor injuries at a local medical center.
Her father requested charges be filed against Filler, who was banned for life from Vail's six ski resorts.

This immature idiot started punching a 14 yr old girl multiple times in the face, stopping only when he was pulled off by a real man. All before he even bothered to stop and see that his 4 year old boy was *completely uninjured*.
As a southern gentleman, I can’t wrap my mind around approving of such actions.
I hope that the 25ish FReeperettes that you’re interested in connecting with realize that you condone grown men punching little girls in the face. At least your post gives them fair warning as to your mindset.
In the boxing ring?
Particularily if it is me that you bear the crap out of.
I am not making arguments. I am so happy that it is ok with you that I present ideas though. I am not selling anything. Know that there are people out there whose purpose in life is to understand behaviors like this guys so that they can be caught when they cross the line. Watch an episode of Criminal Minds for an example. You don’t have to know or don’t want to know, but to criticize those who do is somewhat naive.
I’d like to add that all the states below the Mason/Dixon Line are teeming with real men who would take care of any pretender who likes to beat on women and children. So anybody looking for a place to move to might want to keep that in mind. Anyone who likes to punch little girls in the face might be happier in Massachusetts or New Jersey.
Still does.
500 bucks for assault, huh?
Wonder if someone could get away with a $500 fine if they found him and slapped the taste out of his mouth?
Thank you Trisham.
Who knows what type of personality this kid had? I hope she wasn’t overly affected by it.
I just find it somewhat amusing that your arguments need support. hahaha
Good point! LOL!
Personally I always thought that "ski-jousting" with ski poles sans baskets would be an interesting sport.........LOL!
Okay, you win.
When you suggest to local law enforcement that they must review the files of every adult male that gains access to those slopes, and they must profile them to avoid this sort of thing, I’m right there with you. /s
Does this begin to make it clear to you how silly your ‘understanding’ argument looks to me?
It’s pointless to try to understand this guy. There’s no rational benefit to ‘understanding him’.
There is a rational benefit to putting his ass in prison so he will understand himself the next time, and behave himself.

Not only does he not know the difference between a bunny slope and a beginners’ run, he claims the skier’s responsibility code states that the only possible way to bump into another skier is to go too fast. I called him out on it, but he refuses to either back up his claim or retract it.
See, I guess if I knew that then maybe I would have a different opinion. Do you have information that I should know about?

Last week, on a green slope, a man in his forties came with a few inches of skiing into me. This was Deer Valley on an almost completely empty slope that is nearly as wide as football field.
His excuse: He claimed that he was trying to avoid another skier who had swerved in front of him.
NONSENSE!
Slopes are NOT NOT NOT a highway and do NOT NOT NOT follow traffic rules. The skier in front **always** has the right of way. The skier behind should be prepared ( at **ALL** times) for the forward skier to swerve in front of them. The skier behind must always leave enough room for that possible occurrence and, in fact, should be anticipating it.
This is especially true on a green slope where beginners are often less predictable.
On a scale of 1 to 9, I am rated as an 8.5 skier. Double black ungroomed diamonds is where I spend most of my time. The groomed greens and blues are often just too nutty..but...Yes, even the best of us must use the greens to get back to the car.
The 14 year old should never have been skiing so close to a forward skier that she would need to serve in an uncontrolled manner to avoid hitting him, and, as a result knock over a 4 year old. I hope she permanently has her privileges revoked at Vail resorts as well. Maybe I shouldn't hope for that. She will be more likely to ski Utah where I like to go.
I’m not sure why it would offend you that I back you making opposing arguments to my own, if you disagree. It was a way of letting you know that I’m not angry with you, but arguing these points academically.
I was not trying to Lord it over you, and I think this, “I am so happy that it is ok with you that I present ideas though.” was uncalled for.
A comment like, “Hey, I disagree with you too, but it is nice to give you a hard time for what I see as your failed logic.”, would have been appropriate.
Later...
I find it equally amusing that you have to ridicule the supporting arguments of my points......especially without even offering your own counter argument to anything I have said.........
If I didn't know better I would say you have used this thread as a personal attack on BykrBayb
HaHaHa.....
My interpretation of what I read is that that is exactly what he was doing.

I suspect that since she is a skier, she was likely fairly brave and self-confident before this experience, but I also suspect that it had a profound affect on her. Much depends on her parents.
