Georgia scientist pleads guilty to punching girl on ski slopes (41yr old man punches 14yr girl)

A Decatur man accused of punching a 14-year-old girl in the face for running into his son on the slopes in Colorado has pleaded guilty to third-degree assault.

The Vail Daily reported Tuesday that the plea from 41-year-old Scott Filler, a renowned malaria expert, was for a misdemeanor stemming from the December incident at Beaver Creek Ski Resort.

Police reports say Filler thought the teen was skiing carelessly when she bumped into his 4-year-old son. Eagle County sheriff's deputies say that's when he jumped on the girl and hit her with his fist. The girl said she was swerving to avoid another skier.

District Attorney Mark Hurlbert says Filler was sentenced to anger management classes and restitution, the amount of which would be determined by the girl.

Prosecutors also sought community service, but Hurlbert says the judge fined Filler $500 instead.

Three witnesses told deputies they observed Filler punch girl between two and four times.

The ski instructor who pulled the Decatur man off the girl told deputies Filler punched her "at least four times, using a closed fist," sheriff's Lt. Mike McWilliam told the AJC. Two other witnesses said they observed Filler yell at the girl before landing two or three punches, the sheriff's office spokesman said.

Filler, charged with misdemeanor child abuse, told deputies he thought the girl was skiing carelessly and had seriously injured his son. The boy was not hurt, however, and Filler apologized. The girl was treated for minor injuries at a local medical center.

Her father requested charges be filed against Filler, who was banned for life from Vail's six ski resorts.

I’ve seen it before on FR.

*****************************

I have too, but it still manages to shock me that a man would even consider such a thing.

When you buy your lift ticket there are ample warnings about the hazards of skying. You voluntarily take on the risk for your self and your minor children. That includes getting run over by other skiers.

One hazard you should NOT have to worry about is assault by an idiot adult on a kid.

Anger management might be a good investment.

And let him get it while in jail or right after he gets out. He should not have been given a get out of jail free card. That is just going to tell him what he did was OK.

I agree. I would like to think that if she was a capable skier, she would have moved on to other slopes. She shouldn’t be skiing at more advanced levels around newbies.

That’s why I’m sticking with the idea she was a newbie too.

I do agree with your physics hypothesis, some things you just can’t avoid. I don’t ski, but from listening to people who do, it’s quite well known that the slopes have inherent levels of exposure to injury, or even minimal “accidents”.

He is not going to jail.

Why do you feel she should have suffered discomfort?

Because she was probably guilty of reckless endangerment. Absent other facts, I'm going to trust the judgment of the adult on the scene.

If that was a member of my family, I would beat the hell out of him with his skis. Where I’m from, we don’t hit women. Period.

I was badly injured the first time I skied. People die out there. Remember Sonny Bono?

I haven’t read anywhere that she was going fast, except from FReepers who defend middle aged men punching little girls in the face over and over. What I’ve read is that she bumped into the little boy, and they both fell down, without any injuries. How fast could she have been going if neither of them were hurt? But she must have been going fast, so it was okay for the grown man to punch her repeatedly in the face. And she must have been going fast on purpose, because beginning skiers always have complete control over their speed. And she must have run the boy over on purpose, because 14 year old girls are always punks, just looking for someone to assault. And after the collision, the father of the year had to punch the girl repeatedly in the face to protect his son from something that had already happened. It only looked like revenge. It was really defense of his son, after the fact.

Sorry to hear of your injury too.

Because she was probably guilty of reckless endangerment. Absent other facts, I'm going to trust the judgment of the adult on the scene.

The word of what adult on the scene?

The father who beat her up?

The guy with so little self-control that he'd yell at and punch a 14 year old GIRL?

Sorry, he's disqualified himself from legitimately wearing the label of *adult* from here on in by his actions.

I'd trust the other adults who witnessed this over this 41 year old moron any day. I don't trust anyone who would beat up a girl until forcibly removed to not lie to cover his butt.

The number of misogynists slinking around FR is disgusting.

A fourteen-year-old is not a little girl. I don't give a rat's ass if she's a little girl or not. 14 or 24. Men don't hit women. The last guy I punched out didn't understand that.
