Kerry says government invented Internet, cuts would stifle innovation

Senate John Kerry (D-Mass.) warned Tuesday that spending cuts could wipe out future government achievements, like the invention of the Internet, which Kerry credited to Washington.

“A lot of people don’t think about that. But the fact is the government invented the Internet,” Kerry said in a 30-minute floor speech.

Kerry said the Internet was first conceived by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) as a communications system in case of nuclear war.

“The private sector saw the opportunities and took those opportunities and translated them into what we have today, which has revolutionized the way people communicate and do business,” Kerry said.

The credit government deserves for developing the Internet has long been a subject of partisan wrangling.

Former Vice President Al Gore weathered unrelenting criticism during the 2000 campaign for claiming he “took the initiative in creating the Internet.”

Kerry was the 2004 Democratic nominee for president.

Kerry was one of several Democratic senators who took to the floor Tuesday to speak out against a House-passed measure that would chop another $57 billion from 2010 spending levels. Congress passed a $4 billion cut last week.

Kerry said government-funded innovation has helped create millions of jobs by spawning new products.

He noted the space program led to the creation of Gore-Tex, microwave technology and Teflon.

Kerry said a House-passed proposal that would cut another $57 billion from the federal budget for 2011 would “do great harm to our country because it strops away our ability to be able to create the future, research and development in technology [and] research and development in science.”

Hey Kerry-butt, you wouldn’t have qualified as a janitor for DARPA. You have no academic credentials, your ability for math and logic is non-existant.

And, you’re just plain stupid.

In other words, you have the job most closely matched to your child-like abilities.

At Best NASA helped Medical advances not the Internet.

Al Gore and Kerry need to file a Patent, which would be the only honest money either one ever made.

Lurch is so full of crap. The Rats cling to anything when it comes to cuts. If he knew we were developing this back in the day, he would have been against it. Kerry is a huge Nuclear Disarmament guy and he would have said the funding of this would have been better spent on welfare programs. We would be disarming our nukes anyway, so why fund an obsolete idea like DARPA. Look at his stance on the Missile Shield.

Yup. Al Gore himself wrote the original program on the back of a napkin at MacDonald’s while scarfing down a Big Mac.

Ironic. The US was researching and building communications technologies to defend against the cold war/nuclear threat.

The Dems today would have never funded defense research.

ARPA and DARPA created the internet, but not the World Wide Web that we use our web browsers to see all the pretty pictures and videos and stuff.

There is a big difference as those of us who remember the first days of text services and 300 baud modems know.

Yes, back in the days of using Gopher and Archie searches. I remember the internet before there was any GUI interface and it was all text based. Those were the days when it was all free. You could search colleges and libraries without a fear of a virus or payment being asked and no damn spam.
