A 47-year-old San Jose man was severely injured Friday night when a group of nine to 15 people robbed and attacked him at the Redwood City Caltrain station, authorities said.
Late Saturday, the man remained hospitalized in critical condition, said Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn.
She said the man was waiting for a southbound train when he was attacked about 7:30 p.m. and then left on the ground at the station. The assailants fled before police arrived.
"This is a very unusual situation," Dunn said. "We have almost 40,000 riders a day who have every reason to feel safe while riding Caltrain."
Dunn said the station near downtown Redwood City is adjacent to a shopping center and is also a major bus transit point served by SamTrans buses. "So there is a lot of foot traffic in the station coming and going at all times of the day," she said. "At 7:30, there would be people around."
Dunn said some Caltrain stations have surveillance cameras, but she did not know whether the Redwood City station has any such equipment.
There was no description of any of the assailants, but San Mateo County Transit Police investigators are following leads, including reports of a white compact car seen leaving the scene, she said.
Caltrain officials say they have beefed up security at the Redwood City station.
Anyone who may have witnessed the assault may contact detective Victor Lopez of the San Mateo County Transit Police at (650) 622-8048.

It would only take one shot to have them scattering like cockroaches.
A diverse gang of thugs the left loves so much. Time to start leaving corpses of the vermin when caught.
No it's not
Oh c'mon!
With so many Amish around, anything can happen...
Paging Willie Green! Paging Willie Green!
Another public rail success story!!
Scattering, to live another day, is not good enough.
Just another reason to NOT build super rail systems all over the country.
The Feds, the local cops...CANNOT assure your safety. PERIOD!
A DOZEN assailants in a “Compact” car? I knew it.....CLOWNS!
It's the best you can hope for without going to jail.
Once they turn-tail, it's a violation of the game codes to shoot them.
You shoot two or three....the others would have beat feet.
Was the Shrine Circus in town?
a white car no less...
A car? I thought that only SUV’s commited crimes?
Richmond BART station —just wow..! Or maybe it was North Richmond..?
I’m pretty unfussy about such things, but that places is a complete HOLE.
If you are white or asian and you go there, you are taking your life in your hands.
All kinds of vagrants, drug-addicts and run-down buildings there. The place just screams desperation and anger.
There’s a loophole in the game codes. All you have to do is yell “Time out!” Then they have to stand still until you yell “Time In!” If they move first, you get to shoot them.
bttt
Wait! There's more! It's a compact!
Hmmmm. Nine to fifteen assailants.
Check with PT Barnum, can they account for all their klown kars?
Maybe the people in CA will start to learn how to vote. They voted for this. Poor man. Things are going to get worse but ALL of TV loves Obama.

I get on in San Leandro (mixed bag, going south quickly), then Oakland Coliseum (’hood), then Fruitvale (barrio), then Lake Merritt (downtown Oakland/Chinatown) then West Oakland (’hood) then Embarcadero (SF/Financial District).
Honestly, I rarely ride after 8 PM and most times, I feel pretty safe, there are sometimes cops (10% of the time) that ride or bring dogs onto the trains, but most people are honestly just commuters from the East Bay trying to get to work or school.
There are the occasional homeless, hoodrat (Oscar Grant), druggie, crazy person incidents, but compared to the New York City subway system, this is a piece of cake, and probably even more safe than the T in Boston, which you can quickly jump off and run from as it stops many times on the local routes.
